Category: configuring/installing Group: None
Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Bob_Toxen (bob_toxen) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Missing steps
Initial Comment: The Installation Guide's step 4: O Run bin/check_perms -f is broken! It needs to be changed to: O cd /usr/local/mailman O Run bin/check_perms -f You also need to add the following missing step as per check_perms' complaint just after the new "cd" command above to satisfy check_perms: O chmod o-x archives/private ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1838295 Originator: YES May I humbly suggest that CRITICAL commands not be buried in text where they are easily missed by overworked SysAdmins. Thus, to improve the document add the following prior to the "Run bin/check_perms -f" line: O cd /usr/local/mailman ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Mark Sapiro (msapiro) Date: 2007-07-06 20:32 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1123998 Originator: NO It says "First change to the installation (i.e. $prefix) directory, then run the bin/check_perms program." That seems sufficient. Regarding "chmod o-x archives/private", you may or may not want to do that. I know check_perms says Warning: Private archive directory is other-executable (o+x). This could allow other users on your system to read private archives. If you're on a shared multiuser system, you should consult the installation manual on how to fix this. And it means what it says, i.e. see the "Warning" box in section 4 of the installation manual which tells you what you need to do if you want to protect private archives from access by other users on your system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100103&aid=1749432&group_id=103
