It contacts a spamd daemon (from SpamAssassin -- http://spamassassin.taint.org) to score the message. If the score is above a certain threshold (default 10), the message is discarded and an entry is written to the vette log. If the score is above another lower threshold (default 5), the message is held for moderation. The SpamAssassin.py file should be installed in Mailman/Handlers/. The LIST_PIPELINE variable in Mailman/Handlers/HandlerAPI.py should be modified to include a 'SpamAssassin' item (I put it just after the existing 'SpamDetect' item). To change the defaults, the following can be added to the mm_cfg.py file: SPAMASSASSIN_HOST = 'host:port' # how to contact SA SPAMASSASSIN_DISCARD_SCORE = 10 SPAMASSASSIN_HOLD_SCORE = 5 If you don't want to discard messages, then DISCARD_SCORE can be set to something very high (1000 should do it). It looks the MM2.1 filter APIs have changed a bit, so this filter will need some modifications to work with that version. I didn't run into any problems, with probably 500 messages handled. I've updated to the new version and it seems ok so far, but I've only sent about 10 messages through. There were some bugs in handling of certain error conditions when talking to spamd. I finally tracked down what the problem is, and hopefully someone more skilled in Python than I can create a simple fix. In the open_news function it doesn't check whether the mlist.nntp_host variable is valid or not (in my case it was a null string). A simple if check would solve the problem here, but I think that's addressing the symptom, not the problem. Rather I think the real problem is that the MailList class sets gateway_to_mail to "true" (I'm not sure what the real value is), even if the nntp host name is invalid. Then the process_lists function assumes that nntp_host is valid and calls open_newsgroup on it. I would suggest that if the nntp_host is invalid, that the MailList class not set gateway_to_mail to be "true". Mailman-cvs can't handle .info addresses?

I have someone who subscribed with a .info address to one of my lists, and I have VERP enabled. Apparently, mailman chokes on that (see the verp address, it's incorrect: it doesn't contain the list name). It calls function get_lock_data to find the name of the old lock file that is to be deleted. Function get_lock_data (incorrectly) returns the file name with the directory part of the path stripped, thereby causing the delete to fail and the trap to occur. Function get_lock_data should instead return the entire file path, including directories. The patch given below corrects the behavior of get_lock_data. As an aside, it would be nice if acquire_lock_1 was more forgiving if the os.unlink calls fail due to "no such file". The effect of this bug is that the headers of the subcription annoucement or any further email from the list are "mangled" as was said on [mailman-developers]. As an example when one of the List-* header line is too long, it is broken in two parts (and the second part is indented). Since then, Outlook (and I suppose other email clients) think this second part of the broken header line is the beginning of the body of the message. Therefore the remaining headers are sent as part of the body of the message ! I think this bug does not only occur with too long email adresses but may occur with too long header lines whichever line it is (even with the Subject line especially when this subject line is very long because of quoted-printable characters). See [mailman-developers] for the description of maybe the same bug, in mails dealing with headers being "mangled". Dear Mailman-dev, since I last upgraded I can't make mailman work as it used to! 1) Most importantly and urgently, the confirmation emails do not trigger subscriptions any more : the user receives her "You are subscribed" email, but she does not appear in the subscribers' roster, and her cookie is still there in data/pending.pck 2) A secondary issue is that the iso-something subject lines are totally broken ; I think this is related to the impossibility of installing email-2.0.4 on a python 2.1 box (the _compat22.py file fails and exit) but I'm not sure. What can I do to help track it down/ repair my system? -- Fil

I still think that a language that applies semantics to indentation is silly (though I can remember wishing for it a few times when I was learning programming ;-) ), but at least you guys have written good readable code, even for a non-python guy. Here's the patches to add "discard_nonmember_postings" as an option; it only has effect if member_posting_only is also set and the datafile version is revved to 22 to add it in automatically. I was trying to fix the fact that member_posting_only doesn't properly default, but it seems to be in RadioButtonArray and I can't find that anywhere, either in mailman or in python. Maybe it's cuz it's after 2am. Oh well. While I was looking at that, I saw a comment that said something like "i'd rather have Logout have a blank line in front of it instead of being a big font", so I fixed that too --- kindof a hack, but one I find works well all over the place. It contacts a spamd daemon (from SpamAssassin -- http://spamassassin.taint.org) to score the message. If the score is above a certain threshold (default 10), the message is discarded and an entry is written to the vette log. If the score is above another lower threshold (default 5), the message is held for moderation. The SpamAssassin.py file should be installed in Mailman/Handlers/. The LIST_PIPELINE variable in Mailman/Handlers/HandlerAPI.py should be modified to include a 'SpamAssassin' item (I put it just after the existing 'SpamDetect' item). To change the defaults, the following can be added to the mm_cfg.py file: SPAMASSASSIN_HOST = 'host:port' # how to contact SA SPAMASSASSIN_DISCARD_SCORE = 10 SPAMASSASSIN_HOLD_SCORE = 5 If you don't want to discard messages, then DISCARD_SCORE can be set to something very high (1000 should do it). Does anybody have a patch making it possible to simply drop mail sent from posters who are not subscribed? I run a pile of lists (none of them accept mail from people who are not subscribed) and I get quite tired of having to manually deal with spam posts from people who are not subscribed to the lists. I'll confess I've never hacked python, but it looks pretty straightforward and I'm really tired of going in and weeding out the spam from my several lists every few days. The FAQ for tossing everything is tempting, but I'd like to fix it right and add a setting that says "Discard every post not from a subscriber". I was hoping I could get three quick pointers here so I don't have to wade through the whole thing: 1. Where do the settings listed on the web page get set? 2. Where do they get processed when you submit the form? (I'm assuming looking at this will also tell me how to query the setting later) 3. Where does the decision of what to do with a message not from a subscriber happen? I can probably find this searching through the code, but I thought posting here would a) let people know someone was attempting this, b) tell me if someone else is already doing it and c) maybe someone would let me know if there are any "surprises" lurking... Take a careful look at the rest of your archives and you'll probably note that *everyone's* email address is showing up as listname(a)foo.com. It's a nice anti-spam feature, perhaps, but probably not what you want. Here's a quick fix for pipermail.py: 180c180 < if e is not None: --- > if e is not None and self.email is None: This just changes it so that it defaults to the From: address (when it's set) rather than the Reply-to address. If there's some particular reason to take the Reply-To over the From, I can make something which actually checks to see if the reply-to is being set by the list, but this should solve your problem for the moment.
