Scrubbing Mailman lists

I'd appreciate help adding the following features to Mailman to "scrub" questionable mailing lists into fully verified opt-in lists: I want to start with an unverified mailing list, and segment it into 2 lists containing those who have verified acceptance and those who haven't. Specifically, I'd like to add a footer to messages being sent to the non-verified list segment asking them to click a URL or send email to an address to verify. Taking the verification step would then move them onto the verified list segment. Also, anyone posting to the list would be moved to the verified list segment. I'd like this whole bundle of features to be bottled up as a standard Mailman option for "scrubbing" lists that are not initially 100% verified opt-in (i.e., that didn't originate with Mailman's confirm subscription feature turned on). Has anyone put something similar together already? If not, and you would be interested in doing so, could you please email me directly about doing so as consulting work? Since Mailman is GPL, I would of course release all patches back to the community. mailman and nfs

I set up mailman (2.0.11) on a solaris 2.8 machine and am relatively happy with it. For various reasons, we want the mailman software (and homedir) nfsmounted from elsewhere. Configuring it with a hard nfsmount seems to work well but some here would rather it be automounted. Does mailman support automount? Is it suggested? I got it working with automount but on occasion get unexpected results eg webpage unavailable and giving traceback. I'm wondering if this is just a result of my testing (manually unmounting, reconfiguring, remounting) and getting a sort of race condition ie the partition isn't yet available for web access. Anyone? OSX installation problem - no "mailman" user

I sent this question to the mailman-users list and got no response, so I thought maybe I should try here. I don't know if this is a problem because I'm a novice at these UNIX installations, or if there's something wrong with the Darwin installer: I'm trying to install Mailman on Mac OS X, and it's not working for me. For some reason, it keeps saying "no mailman user found" when I try to run configure... I've tried setting up said user in the System Preferences and in NetInfo. The user exists in the System Preferences, has a home directory, etc... but configure doesn't work. Do you have any ideas? Maybe I didn't enter some necessary things in NetInfo, or maybe something's not setgid'd right, or I don't know what. Thanks, Greg Westin westin(a)fas.harvard.edu

mailman checks for the installation directories during configury. IMO this wrongly assumes, that - the build machine is the target machine - the directories already exist during configuration - you don't use a temporary installation directory 2.1b2 works ok. Found this while making experimental Debian packages. suggestion for configure

Add a --with-fqdn and --with-url or equivalent. The current cvs snapshot can't guess my fqdn on my production box, and it's used now to build a web of interconnected addresses, as well as populate the VIRTUAL_HOSTS table, so I had to do a bunch of deleting and repairing in mm_cfg. I can, if I *remember*, which I've already forgotten once, fix it when I build by setting FQDN and URL environment variables, so that configure picks those up by default, but I have a habit of just looking at config.status to see how I ran configure the last time. Having an explicit configure switch would be nice.

I' released Mailman 2.0.12 which fixes a cross-site scripting vulnerability, among other changes. I recommend that folks upgrade their 2.0.x systems to this new version. Well-behaved 'bots should always include such a header. - Changes to the configure script so that you can pass in the mail host and web host by setting the environment variables MAILHOST and WWWHOST respectively. configure will also exit if it can't figure out these values (usually due to broken dns). - Closed another minor cross-site scripting vulnerability.

This is a terrible design decision. Make for creating packages a total nightmare. Forcing a package builder to add entries into /etc/passwd and /etc/group, is another bad design decision. 2 pgms to assist in maintaining lists

Hi, I've written 2 programs to help me maintain my mailing lists. The first I call "add_nonmembers". This program is based on add_members (I copied add_members to add_nonmembers and modified it :-). What it does is give me a simple command line interface to modifying the 4 options: accept_these_nonmembers hold_these_nonmembers reject_these_nonmembers discard_these_nonmembers 3 of my mailing lists are for the particular type of employee: faculty, grads and staff. I want anyone on any of the lists to be able to post to any of the lists. Under majordomo I could point their equivalent of "accept_these_nonmembers" to a file which I would generate by listing all the members of all 3 lists. Under mailman I need to add everyone from the "other 2 lists" to the first list's accept_these_nonmembers option. I didn't see an easy way to do this, so I wrote add_nonmembers. The second program I wrote I call "subscribe_lists". It's similar to add_members, except it takes an address and as many lists as you want and subscribes the address to all of the lists. When we setup a new user, we usually subscribe them to multiple lists -- I felt it was easier to have a straightforward way to do this (rather than running add_members <n> times for <n> lists with the address coming from stdin each time. I'll include them (since they are short) -- or is there a better way to submit these? (if anyone is even interested :-) ...dave alden ps These are based on 2.1b2.

It contacts a spamd daemon (from SpamAssassin -- http://spamassassin.taint.org) to score the message. If the score is above a certain threshold (default 10), the message is discarded and an entry is written to the vette log. If the score is above another lower threshold (default 5), the message is held for moderation. The SpamAssassin.py file should be installed in Mailman/Handlers/. The LIST_PIPELINE variable in Mailman/Handlers/HandlerAPI.py should be modified to include a 'SpamAssassin' item (I put it just after the existing 'SpamDetect' item). To change the defaults, the following can be added to the mm_cfg.py file: SPAMASSASSIN_HOST = 'host:port' # how to contact SA SPAMASSASSIN_DISCARD_SCORE = 10 SPAMASSASSIN_HOLD_SCORE = 5 If you don't want to discard messages, then DISCARD_SCORE can be set to something very high (1000 should do it). It looks the MM2.1 filter APIs have changed a bit, so this filter will need some modifications to work with that version.
