Thanks for the update Alex. I can confirm that Thunderbird on Ubuntu 12.10 can read the one newsgroup that has about 88 messages in it. Claws cannot though - it thinks the newsgroup is empty.
I only tried port 119.
I have not had a chance to look at the code yet.
