Mailman 2.1 (which rocks in most respects) gives a message like this:
An attempt was made to subscribe your address to the mailing list foo@bar.org. You are already subscribed to this mailing list.
I agree with this in general, but it seems that it would be better to detect the case where the user has deliveries disabled. I'm sure some people will find this puzzling: they think they're unsubscribed, but Mailman says they are.
Perhaps the message should conditionally tell them they have delivery disabled, and that it can be reenabled through the web interface.
