telnet localhost 25
I am just guessing, but could this also be to the
/etc/hosts
folder permissions? This is whatls -ld /etc/hosts
produces: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 281 2012-06-29 03:08 /etc/hosts
So anything can read it, so that shouldn't be an issue.
