Hi all
Applications for GSoC 2023 are open and I would like to apply. Program details: https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2023 You may need to log in with a Google account.
We could go under the PSF umbrella again (they've applied already), or we could go it alone. The advantage to the PSF is we can possibly borrow a mentor from them as we did in 2022 and they'll do some of the org admin stuff, the advantage to a separate Mailman org is money and tickets to the Mentor Summit if they do that. There may be other stuff I haven't thought about. If we decide to apply ourselves but get cold feet, I suppose we can withdraw without penalty and go with PSF if we do so a reasonable time before deadline (Feb 8).
I need some backing from core devs (at least one backup mentor, which is light work if I'm healthy), but I plan to post to the lists to see if any of the usual suspects would like to be mentors, too.
Steve
Hi Stephen,
The very promising last year project "List Configuration Tool" seems wasn't completed. What is the usual action course in this case? Should it be re-added to the new program? (I hope it won't be buried...)
Sincerely, Danil Smirnov

No, it's done. It's just that the student is a master student who changed his mind about his future in August, and spent the last few months polishing applications to PhD programs instead of integrating his GSoC project. Final presentation of his master thesis is in two weeks, then I lean on him to do some documentation and a PR.
All projects from previous years that weren't selected or obsoleted by ongoing development will be added again when I get around to updating the ideas page (in practice I just copy last year's and make small changes), but that's also a couple weeks in the future.
Steve
Great! Thank you very much for your answer and care.

Hello everyone, my name is Lalit Chauhan, a prospective GSOC 2023 contributor and I'm excited to be joining the GNU Mailman open source community! I'm looking forward to getting to know the members of this community, learning from experienced developers, and contributing to exciting open source projects. Please let me know the procedure to contribute and be accepted as a contributor so that I can pick up a good first issue and start contributing. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or just want to say hello! Wishing a productive summer to all contributors and mentors ! Happy Coding :)
Hi Lalit,
(If you prefer to be called something else, a nickname or we should use an honorific, please let us know.)
The basic procedure for GSoC is
- Read our GSoC Ideas page at https://wiki.list.org/DEV/Google%20Summer%20of%20Code%202023 The top of the page explains how GSoC works in our org.
- Think about projects that interest you (even if that means "just know more about") or that seem appropriate to your existing skills if you're looking to apply those rather than, or in addition to, learning new ones.
- Get a GitLab account if you don't already have one, and check the issue tracker at https://gitlab.com for easy or interesting issues that you can work on (you need to demonstrate you know your way around our change submission process), The issue doesn't need to be code, it can be a typo fix (including one you submit yourself); the requirement is showing you've done our paperwork.
You don't have to submit a project from our ideas page, although that's usually the most straightforward, and you shouldn't assume that anything one the page is necessarily high priority for us.

Hello, I am Haleel Sada. I am excited to introduce myself to the Mailman team. I am keen to contribute to Mailman's codebase and help improve its performance. Thank you for this opportunity, and I am looking forward to working alongside the open-source community to create software that benefits everyone..
Hello Everyone! I'm Durlabh Pathak and I'll be participating in GSoC '23. As a cybersecurity enthusiast, I'm interested in developing security tools with Python. I'm proficient in Python and have decided to contribute to open-source projects. I've been focusing my efforts on GNU Mailman and looking forward to submit a proposal for "Support for Encrypted Lists" project. I've already submitted a pull request and am now browsing the easy label issues. If you have any suggestions or would be willing to review my draft proposal, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for you time!
