The "bogus archive directory" issue seems to come up fairly often. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to add a check to cron/nightly_gzip to find out if it is simply a matter of there not yet being any articles to archive. Mailman could check post_id or last_post_time. I've attached one possibility.
