Should we be a little cautious about putting new features into 2.1? I think that once 2.1.8 goes out and we switch to svn, it'll be a lot easier to start working on 2.2, where the bulk of new features like this can go.

Yes, I absolutely agree. That's why this patch/feature was only applied to the trunk and not to the Release_2_1-maint branch.
If you're saying should we hold off completely on putting new features in CVS and wait for svn, I can do that too. Please clarify.
