Mailman has support for anonymous lists, which can rewrite the From header to substitute the mailing list's posting address for the original author's address. I frankly don't know how much that feature is used in MM2.1, if at all.
This code was useful to do the patch for MM2.1. I too doubt it is much in use, after all we gave away our privacy long time ago on all the social networks and cloud services... but I guess it answered a need otherwise it would not have been there.
