I've found another problem... if the cronjob that creates the digest runs at a time when sendmail is down (dunno why but it may happen), then it is lost. It would be nicer if mailman used sendmail directly, and not thru port 25.

This problem is known. Unfortunately, calling sendmail is highly unportable. The next release will queue up messages until sendmail becomes available. If I have time, you'll be able to call sendmail as instead, as an option.
