The extra space after the 'directory' suggests, to me, that Mailman will append the directory name. In Dutch, the best translation would be
msgstr "Maak archief directory %(directory)s aan."
How about: "Bezig met aanmaken van archief directory "

Yeah, that's why I said I could work around *this* one :) I'm pretty sure the same won't hold for other languages, though, or for other translatable strings, so the issue still stands ;)
