Greetings, I am trying to install Mailman 2.1b2 on Redhat Linux 7.3. Redhat has apparently chosen to include both python 1.5.2-38 AND python2-2.2-16. In order to have both installed they have changed the name of python 2 to python2. List Reply Address

I'm using 2.1b2 and I've started getting complaints about the "reply" address in the digests. It appears that all digests come from their respective lists -request address with no "reply-to" address specified. That means if someone just clicks "reply", their message goes to the request address instead of to the regular list. Is this intentional behavior or am I missing a setting somewhere?? -- Sarah Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

Multiple filesystems?

Our list archives are growing past the point where a single filesystem will hold it. RAID becomes an option, but I'm curious about ways of handling this with multiple separate filesystems. This has obvious advantages for containment of filesystem damage and (certain forms of) backup, besides better performance under certain usage patterns, and I tend to favor it as an approach. Mailman OOB would rather dump all list archives into a single directory. I suppose that conjuring my own Python code to munge archive_directory, private_archive_file_dir, and public_archive_file_dir in a list's config database should get me around this constraint. However, developing a set of tools for migrating and balancing archive directories, both at creation time and and later times, is a touch more Python development than I really want to try at home. Has anyone else crossed this bridge with some tools that they'd be willing to share? At worst, I could write some small programs to tweak the config files, then call them from another language. But I've found that shelling off thousands of python interpreters (one per list) gets to be a tiresome approach, and I'd rather keep it all in-process. -- -D. dgc(a)uchicago.edu NSIT University of Chicago

password questions

I have created a new list and added members using the add_members script. I did send not notification to any members. I now need to enable the new members to unsubscribe if they wish. These users will not have web access. How can I create a list which doesn't require a password for users to unsubscribe themselves? or Is it possible to set a default password when using add_members to 'mass add' addresses to a list? or Is there a better way to do this? Non-Member & Moderated List (reposted question)

I asked about this last week and never saw a response, so I'm going to try and ask with a little more detail. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I have not poked around the code to see why this occurs this way. When you run a list that is non-moderated, but you limit posts to the subscribers list, a post by a non-member results in this error: Reason: Post by non-member to a members-only list If you go into "Privacy Options" and change "Must posts be approved by an administrator?" and maintain "Restrict posting privilege to list members" a post by a non-subscriber results in THIS reason: Reason: Post to moderated list Unless I am missing a configuration option, I believe this is a flaw in the order in which mailman is checking posts. Even if a list is moderated, the reason this individual post was rejected should still read Reason: Post by non-member to a members-only list or, a new reason should be made like this: Reason: Post by a non-member to a members-only AND moderated list This may seem like a silly request, but if you run a members only list that happens to be moderated as well, you run into the problem of accidentally approving a post from a non-member when the content of that post was "on topic". Is there a fix for this? Would this classify as a bug? Does anyone know of any other work arounds? When you have a few thousand people on a mailing list, its not really easy to realize on your own that a specific individual isn't a subscriber to the list. Especially when you have multiple individuals help administrate the list itself. -Jeff

Mailman with Virtual Hosting

Greetings, I have a CPanel "reseller" account which allows me to add and seel domains which in turn can create and manage Mailman mailing lists. Let's say for example that the machine I have accounts on is called ns1.servername.com If I set up a domain called, www.domain1.com and they add a mailing list called mylist, the admin address that is created is ns1.servername.com/mailman/admin/domain1list_domain1.com rather than domain1.com/mailman/admin/domain1list Likewise same situation exists with the archivesm they are are under the server name and not the domain name. This is confusing for my users. I want to be able to manage importing archives for my clients, but this situation places all the files outside of the domain space so I think it will require the intervention of the server operator. Also, I am concerned that the quota settings for the domains will not reflect the archives. Is there some way to accomplish these things using Mailman in a virtual hosting environment such as I'm describing? Thanks for any suggestions, Robin

Is there any mean to authorize unsubscribing by email without the password? In this case, the originator address would be enough. Thanks

Crisis

All seemed to be working OK, when someone mentioned that they's sent mail from an unsubscribed account and it got posted to the list. I checked the management options, but could find a setting to specify wither this is a public, private, or closed list.
