Mailman 3 July 2004 - Mailman-Users

from: field
by AllenHost mailman July 8, 2004

July 8, 2004

I have a customer who has created an announce-only list. He wants the from: field to be an email address he specifies, not the list email address. Can that be configured? I don't mind hard-coding it if I know where to look. No luck with the FAQ wizard or archives on this. If it's there and I missed it please give me a steer in the right direction. Thanks, Larry

New Lists not being displayed
by Will Nordmeyer July 8, 2004

July 8, 2004

Hi, I saw this question was asked April 4, 2003, but was unable to find an answer to it. I was using mailman V2.1.4, just upgraded to V2.1.5. The last 2 mailing lists created under V2.1.4 aren't showing up on the listinfo pages for the websites in question. I can go to www.domain.com/mailman/listinfo/lista and can access it, but when I go to www.domain.com/mailman/listinfo it doesn't show as a list. The permissions have it set to be an advertised list on the server though. Any ideas? --Will

Integrating mailman with customer data
by Ben M. Swihart July 8, 2004

July 8, 2004

Hello, Mailman basically has a database of e-mail addresses and (optionally) names. Commercial clients of mine find databases like these very useful. However, most of them need a little more data about their customers. NAME ADDRESS E-MAIL PHONE ... Etc... One of the best way to gather this data is on the web. Typically, someone who gathers this data will want to contact them. They can either send them a nice card in the postal mail or, at much less cost, send them a mass e-mail. This is where mailman comes in. It seems to me to be the best written open-source method of doing safe, responsible, mass delivery of e-mail. However, there seems to be little consideration for the idea that e-mail address is typically only one field in a database of customers that is used in real life to make money and/or grow business. All I am trying to accomplish is integrate the powerful functionality of mailman with a database of customers. When someone wishes to contact all of their customers by e-mail, then they should be using mailman IMHO because it's intelligent about headers, MTA's, logging, configuration, and much more. So... Since I can't expand mailman's database of customers, I have to use another database and middleware such as MySQL/PHP. Whenever I manage this database via admin tools, if I delete a customer or change their e-mail address, then I have to manage them in mailman as well. It makes no sense to have to have to do things twice every time you add/change a customer! This basic idea of using mailman in concert with more data about who is being e-mailed does not seem all that foreign or unusual to me, but reading through the mailman documents and posting to this list leaves me feeling like I am trying to use mailman to power my hobby spacecraft to 100km! Hoping to find someone who has succeeded at this sort of implementation, Ben M. Swihart

Mailman + qmail/vpopmail
by Nick De Decker July 8, 2004

July 8, 2004

Hello, I just installed mailman on my server but it won't send out mail. I configured mailman using: --with-cgi-gid="ivdaemons" (apache runs under this group) --with-mail-gid="qmail" (I got the qmail and the qmailq groups, maybe this should be something different ?) After installation I ran the check_perms script and evenything was ok. I also created the mailman list. www.mysite.com/mailman/admin also worked, i was able to create a new list there. However mailman won't send out mail, in the mailman/logs directory I find messages like this: Post log: Jul 08 23:19:12 2004 (28232) post to inpeach from mailman-admin(a)lists.inpeach.com, size=1855, message-id=<mailman.0.1089319931.28441.inpeach(a)lists.inpeach.com>, 1 failures Jul 08 23:19:13 2004 (28232) post to inpeach from inpeach-request(a)lists.inpeach.com, size=1660, message-id=<mailman.0.1089320076.28560.inpeach(a)lists.inpeach.com>, 1 failures Jul 08 23:19:13 2004 (28232) post to inpeach from inpeach-request(a)lists.inpeach.com, size=1658, message-id=<mailman.0.1089321412.29528.inpeach(a)lists.inpeach.com>, 1 failures Smtp log: Jul 08 23:19:12 2004 (28232) <mailman.0.1089319931.28441.inpeach(a)lists.inpeach.com> smtp for 1 recips, completed in 0.005 seconds Jul 08 23:19:13 2004 (28232) <mailman.0.1089320076.28560.inpeach(a)lists.inpeach.com> smtp for 1 recips, completed in 0.005 seconds Jul 08 23:19:13 2004 (28232) <mailman.0.1089321412.29528.inpeach(a)lists.inpeach.com> smtp for 1 recips, completed in 0.005 seconds Smtp-failure log: Jul 08 23:04:13 2004 (28232) Low level smtp error: (2, 'No such file or directory'), msgid: <mailman.0.1089319555.27957.mailman(a)lists.inpeach.com> Jul 08 23:04:13 2004 (28232) delivery to listmaster(a)lists.inpeach.com failed with code -1: (2, 'No such file or directory') Jul 08 23:04:13 2004 (28232) Low level smtp error: (2, 'No such file or directory'), msgid: None Jul 08 23:04:13 2004 (28232) delivery to mailman-owner(a)lists.inpeach.com failed with code -1: (2, 'No such file or directory') Jul 08 23:04:13 2004 (28232) Low level smtp error: (2, 'No such file or directory'), msgid: <mailman.0.1089319931.28441.inpeach(a)lists.inpeach.com> Jul 08 23:04:13 2004 (28232) delivery to nick(a)ivict.com failed with code -1: (2, 'No such file or directory') Jul 08 23:04:13 2004 (28232) Low level smtp error: (2, 'No such file or directory'), msgid: <mailman.0.1089320076.28560.inpeach(a)lists.inpeach.com> Jul 08 23:04:13 2004 (28232) delivery to info(a)ivict.com failed with code -1: (2, 'No such file or directory') Judging from the the logs I think the aliases aren't set up correctly. The problem is that I am running qmail in combination with vpopmail. I don't have an idea how to setup the aliases. In my lists.inpeach.com domain I tried creating soms .qmail files -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 83 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 84 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman-admin -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 86 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman-bounces -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 86 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman-confirm -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 83 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman-join -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 84 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman-leave -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 84 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman-owner -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 86 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman-request -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 88 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman-subscribe -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 90 Jul 8 21:02 .qmail-mailman-unsubscribe But it does not seem to work Maybe it is in conflict with the vpopmail setup ? I don't have a clue , any help is welcome. RE: [Mailman-Users] Moving beyond the Newsletter FAQ
by Ben M. Swihart July 8, 2004

July 8, 2004

I could, as you suggest, send them to mailman's web interface so they can then add themselves, but it's a great deal of work (if not impossible) to get this page to match an existing design. Here is my subscription page: http://thetroutdale.spiritguardian.com/mailinglist.php Also, when someone wishes to enter a contest, they have an option of subscribing to a newsletter. This is a very commonly enabled feature to forms online that collect customer data. If they opt to subscribe to the newsletter during contest entry, then I must somehow interact with the mailman instance following or preceding data entry. Here is the contest page: http://thetroutdale.spiritguardian.com/contest.php Regards, Ben -----Original Message----- From: Dan Phillips [mailto:dhphllps@memphis.edu] Sent: Thursday, July 08, 2004 4:30 PM To: Ben M. RE: [Mailman-Users] Moving beyond the Newsletter FAQ
by Ben M. Swihart July 8, 2004

July 8, 2004

Your suggestion appears to be: For every user who wishes to subscribe to the newsletter an admin (me or my client) must go to a web page and manually add them, one at a time. This is completely unviable. Either I am harassing my very busy client to add members manually or I am spending valuable time (for which I'm certain I could never bill the client) doing this task myself . If there is not a way for users to add themselves to a one-way newsletter mode of mailman, it's simply not practical. Thank you for your reply, Ben -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Barger [mailto:jeff@look.net] Sent: Thursday, July 08, 2004 4:33 PM To: Ben M. The admin generally would do it through the built-in web interface. Subscribers should be able to go to the listinfo page and attempt to subscribe or attempt it through the -request, -join and -subscribe addresses. As far as I know there are no admin tools available through email beyond the 'who' command. -Jeff

Mailman speed
by Jacob Friis Larsen July 8, 2004

July 8, 2004

Is Mailman as fast as sending 3000 mails with 10 recipients in BCC, or even faster? We currently send 30000 newsletters twice a day, and would like to find out if Mailman is as fast as our current system. Thanks, Jacob
