I've got a new problem with my mailing list. I run a local announcements/trade list that should be of no interest to non-locals. I started seeing warnings from Yahoo about users marking messages as spam.. (I'm subscribed to Yahoo's Antispam Feedback. I never got other feedback loops from others - like Microsoft - to work). The messages that were being marked as spam by users were the confirmation emails sent by mailman to confirm a signup. To avoid having Yahoo shut down the list as spam (for its subscribers), I set the subscription to be approved by admin, so I could review who was trying to sign up. More and more now I'm seeing what appears to be spammers trying to subscribe, but I can't be sure. I'm seeing emails like: hirofeet0916(a)yahoo.co.jp (doesn't seem local) blvckpvlm(a)gmail.com (not many use user names such as that) fsafwcasgsadf2(a)gwqc.com (obviously not real - couldn't find domain with minimal searching) Plus some that could be local but how would I know. I could take off the "approval by admin" for subscription and just deal with anyone that is a problem afterward, but I do worry that they may be harvesting emails from subscribers, which are available in the reply-to headers. Don't know if there's anything I can do. Anyone else dealing with this? thanks. Jim

Editing Mailman's text files

Hi. I'm a new member of this group but have been running an email list with Mailman for a long time. I am now setting a list up again and want to give a "look and feel" to the list which has more branding of my user group as a whole, and less of a Mailman-feel. I seem to remember that besides editing the public HTML pages, it is possible to edit the text files which Mailman automatically sends out for certain needs (such as 'approve.txt', 'adminsubscribeack.txt', 'invite.txt', and so on). A. Is this still the case? B. If so, where can I find them? (in case they've changed from the ones I have from long ago). C. Where do they need putting, so that Mailman can use them again? It's important that I should tell you that Mailman on my webhosts servers is a "server-wide" installation, and I don't get to edit anything which other clients to their servers need. This would be only for my own use, and as such I need to know where these files go in my own webspace, and how to get Mailman to use them instead of the default ones. I should also say that I have done this before, so unless the facility to do this has been ditched in recent years, I *should* still be able to do it ! Does Mailman perhaps look for these files somewhere in my webspace (which I have to give a specific name), and if it doesn't find them it goes on to find its default versions of these files? Admin Requests Time Out

I am trying to submit an admin request (rejecting an email) but when I click "submit" it times out. I don't see anything in the log file (maybe I need to look somewhere else). Restarting the service does not help nor does rebooting the system. Need help diagnosing an intermittent DMARC mung failure

Hi, I'd like some help diagnosing an intermittent DMARC mung failure on Mailman 2.1.29. Some of the time DMARC munging works perfectly fine, and then seemingly with no configuration changes, DMARC munging stops working. Then after restarting Mailman it may start working again. -- We don't have hard consistent data yet. But we do have a sender that some of the time their system their messages come through with "First Last via List" <list(a)listdomain.example> and then other times their messages come through with "First Last" <sender(a)sendersdomain.example>. No changes on the senders side / infrastructure and no changes on the mailing list config / infrastructure. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to start troubleshooting this? N.B. I don't have root on the system but I do have the ear of people that do. I might be able to check logs if I have read permission on them. I'm not seeing any obvious problems in the logs that I can read. I may have to relay diagnostic requests to the admins if I don't have permission. -- Grant. . . .

Cloudmark blacklist

Hi, I run two very low traffic Mailman lists on my Linode. This morning one of them got an Email, and that's when I found out thanks to Comcast that my IP is on Cloudmark's blacklist. Naturally I've sent in a reset request using the form linked from the Comcast error message, and am still waiting to be removed. A few days ago I sent to a Comcast customer with no problem. I've resolved the problem sending to Comcast by enabling my server to send using IPv6. This required me to have Linode allocate me my own /64 since my default IPv6 address was in a /64 blocked by Spamhaus XBL/CSS lists. Does anyone know if Cloudmark blocks entire IP ranges or just individual addresses? I don't know why my IP is on Cloudmark's list, as most of the Email I send is personal in nature, to people I have corresponded with for years. I've used multiple RBL check tools, and everything has come back negative, except that my entire subnet is on Spamgrouper.to (checked by running a check on a neighboring IP). I have SPF, DKIM, and DMARC set up. I'm getting really tired of these unexplained blacklistings. Does anyone know of any reliable outgoing Email service providers? Ideally I want to continue to handle my own incoming Email because I don't want someone else's spam blocking software deciding what Emails I receive. Thanks, Jayson

Admin Panel Spam Filters: Filtering Message Body for Keywords?

Hello All, **Question: Is there a way to use [Spam filters] (or any other setting in the GUI admin panel) to filter for keywords in the body of the incoming email message?** ~~~ Looking for help on use of the "[Spam filters]" option under "Privacy Options...". My situation is that I don't have access to the back-end to set up any more sophisticated filters (Dream Host) so I need to ONLY utilize tools available through the web GUI administrative panel. Online examples of how to do this are strangely hard to find, other than discussions of how to look at headers for spam filter scores. Somehow, a few months ago, I managed to find this example of how to filter an email subject line: \nSubject: .*Jerusalem.* Which we then Hold for moderation. I would like to do the exact same thing for the body of the email message -- filter the message body for keywords. Something like: \nBody: .*Jerusalem.* **Question: Is there a way to use [Spam filters] (or any other setting in the GUI admin panel) to filter for keywords in the body of the incoming email message?** Our use case is that we have a 20+ year tradition of allowing polite and respectful political discussion, but need to hold for moderation all messages on the Middle East situation due to it just being too explosively emotional for even psychotherapists to keep their sh*t together. Create a list with multiple admins?

Using mailman-2.6.x: Is it possible to create a list (via CLI or the WUI) which has multiple owner addresses? Noobie: Where's default_moderation_action?

Hello, all, I'm starting to configure and maintain my first email list, using Mailman 2.1.39, primarily through the mailing list administration web pages. The list is an announcement-only list, with about 5 of the subscribers allowed to post messages. Periodically, I get a new batch of a dozen or so subscribers, that I subscribe using 'Mass subscription.' Then, since the new user's moderation flag is not set, I have to set everyone's moderation flag to On, using the checkbox on the Membership Management page. But, this sets the moderation flag for the five authorized posters, so I have to look each one up and manually unset their moderation flag. How can I avoid these actions and default to 'moderation required' for all new subscribers? I found something about the 'default_moderation_action' variable, but I can't find this in the web interface pages for Mailman 2.1.39. Am I overlooking it somewhere?
