When unsubscribing an email through the web interface (by
unselecting the 'subscr' box) , is there a way to tell Mailman _NOT_ to send out an unsubscribe message to said address?

No. It looks like bin/remove_members also sends an unsubscribe. If it were important enough, you could temporarily set the goodbye_msg to null; that would stop it. Or you could hack a copy of bin/remove_members to include "userack=0" in the call to DeleteMember().

Which seems to point up a flaw in the wording of that entry in the Admin pages...this isn't just "additional text"...it is also a switch which turns the message off or on.
