set up mailman, but no email notification

I finally got mailman working to the point I created 'mailman' list successfully. Everything has worked correctly, but despite it showing that mailman has sent a notice to the administrator email account, that email has never made it into my email inbox.
What would cause that email not to correctly send out the message?
