For the specs which Satya mentioned in his email earlier, cost should be around 4-6k (this is subjective and dependent on the hosting provider).
From my experience of running fosstr.org, I went with the basic plan (5$/mo) from Digital Ocean. We're currently running a Mailman instance for the mailing list, a Django app(RSVP) and the website static files which is purely HTML.

Another thing came to my mind which we can host under the banner of https://pydelhi.org that requires server resource is http://www.planetplanet.org/ (thoughts?). The idea is to provide a platform/audience that can keep up and encourage blog writing in out community. That said, here is final list of applications under proposal for hosting: - Etherpad[1] : pads.pydelhi.org , we will be using this for planning , ideation and notes taking for the group . - IRC Bot (maximus) : Will be based on Hubot[2] for logging and monitoring the channel - ZNC server[3] : IRC bouncer for the community - Planet Feed Reader[4] : To aggregate community blog posts via RSS feeds We are looking for both infrastructure providers as well as maintainer for these applications. We as a community, welcome and appreciate your contribution. Hi, We are looking for sponsors for a Virtual Server with the following specs
Ram 512 MB - 1 GB HDD Space 30 GB
This server will be used for the following purposes
Why not use a free alternatives instead of taking and managing a VPS? We could use the efforts required to setup and manage a VPS for other things. Here are my suggestions. Etherpad : pads.pydelhi.org , we will be using this for planning , ideation
and notes taking for the group .
You can use hackpad.com . Create pydelhi.hackpad.com and use it for discussions.
IRC Bot (maximus) : Will be based on Hubot for logging and monitoring the channel ZNC server : IRC bouncer for the community
You can try Heroku or RedHat OpenShift. Both Heroku and OpenShift have free tiers. It should be possible to run these on them. let us know if you have any further questions and queries regarding the
same.
Don't you think that would a lot easier to manage than having a VPS? Anand

been a user of it on the datameet community , do not know what the limitations are or what one has to pay after certain period , tried searching for pricing could not locate one.

The idea of VPS was people will learn while they install and maintain there own stuff , yes there will always be a compromise between which works and which works sometimes . i also saw one limitation of Google hangout of ten people which was hit pretty quickly . there will be one more requirement of video sooner :-) So yeah the build vs buy decisions are something better taken and answered by people who are doing it and are on the list , over to you people . cheers -Satya

agreed.

I've been on the list since past 2-3 years and recently been involved in lot ongoing activities related to facilitating tools/technologies for better communication and marketing/outreach of Python Delhi User Group. Given the skill-set and enthusiasm our volunteer's have I don't see any reason not to have a basic machine by/for the community. I personal think sponsors as part of our community, like any one else. We have some urgent requirements (Etherpad, bots, ZNC, etc.) which need to be configurable, scalable and are not locked down due to any reasons. Why we need to host these ourself is already explained by Satyakam, and I agree. We may also have other temporary requirements during workshops/events (running an iPython server), teaching server deployments, etc. where we can use these servers. PS: We had given root ssh access to kids of grade 6-8 during pychill[1] of a digital ocean instance as 1. they didn't had sudo access to schools machines 2. connecting and working on actual uncontrolled remote server is fun! I hope I made our(my) intensions little clearer, and would like anyone willing and capable to help out our community. **Footnotes: [1] https://pychill.fossevents.in Cheers, -- **Saurabh Kumar https://saurabh-kumar.com On Fri, Jun 26, 2015 at 10:46 AM, satyaakam goswami <satyaakam@gmail.com> wrote:

True, there are cheaper, even free alternatives however and we are using them where ever possible. pydelhi.org is hosted on github ... pychill website is hosted on github ... we are using google docs / hangouts etc to collaboratively edit the minutes of our meetings. fossevents is running on heroku ... etc And we ourselves can easily contribute enough for us to launch a few digital Ocean instances, infact, most of us are already running atleast one for our personal fiddling around ... However, this small yet meaningful contribution and (few more like these) should give the feeling of ownership to the industries as well ... that its not the community vs the industries but the *community comprises of people and industries* and that they form an integral part. It may not work this way ... but hey ... whats the harm in trying? On Fri, Jun 26, 2015 at 11:51 AM, Saurabh Kumar <thes.kumar@gmail.com> wrote:
