general version of repmat?

Is there some way to get the equivalent of repmat() for ndim == 1 and ndim >2. For ndim == 1, repmat always returns a 2-d array, instead of remaining 1-d. For ndim >2, repmat just doesn't work. Maybe we could add a 'reparray', with the signature: reparray(A, repeats, axis=None) where repeats is a scalar or a sequence. If 'repeats' is a scalar then the matrix is duplicated along 'axis' that many times. If 'repeats' is a sequence of length N, then A is duplicated repeats[i] times along axis[i]. If axis is None then it is assumed to be (0,1,2...N). Er that's not quite complete, because it doesn't specify what happens when you reparray an array to a higher dimension, like a 1-d to a 3-d. Like reparray([1,2], (2,2,2)). I guess the axis parameter could have some 'newaxis' entries to accomodate that. --bb

take behaviour has changed

Hi, from 1.0b1 to 1.0rc1 the default behaviour of take seems to have changed when omitting the axis argument: In [13]: a = reshape(arange(12),(3,4)) In [14]: take(a,[2,3]) Out[14]: array([2, 3]) In [15]: take(a,[2,3],1) Out[15]: array([[ 2, 3], [ 6, 7], [10, 11]]) Is this intended? Christian

Question about recarray

Hi all, Is it possible to put masked values into recarrays, I need a array with heterogenous types of datas (datetime objects in the first col, all others are float) but with missing values in some records. For the moment, I don't find any solution for that. reading large files

I would like to read files >2Gbyte. From earlier posting I believed it should be possible with python 2.5. I am getting MemoryError when trying to read a file larger than 2Gb. I am using python2.5 and numpy1.0rc1. Any solution to the problem? SEH

Putmask/take ?

Hello all, I just had someone from my lab coming to my desk saying: "My god - SciPy is really stupid .... An array with only positive numbers claims to have a negative mean !! "? I was asking about this before ... the reason was of course that her array was of dtype int32 and had many large values to cause an overflow (wrap around) . Now that the default for axis is None (for all functions having an axis argument), can we please change dtype to default to float64 !? It is really a very confusing and shocking result to get a negative mean on all positive values. It has been stated here before that numpy should target the "scientist" rather than the programmers ... I would argue that mean() almost always requires the precision of "double" (float64) to produce usable results. Please consider this change before the 1.0 release ... Thanks, Sebastian Haase

I want to be able to print an array in scientific notation. I have seen the set_printoptions() functions, but it doesn't really have an option for *always* using scientific notation. Can this be done? How? Thanks Brian

Apparently numpy.matrixmultiply got moved into numpy.oldnumeric.matrixmultiply at some point (or rather ceased to be imported into the numpy namespace). Is there any list of all such methods that got banished? This would be nice to have in the release notes. --bb

Tests and code documentation

Travis, A few questions. 1) I can't find any systematic code testing units, although there seem to be tests for regressions and such. Is there a place we should be putting such tests? 2) Any plans for code documentation? I documented some of my stuff with doxygen markups and wonder if we should include a Doxyfile as part of the package. 3) Would you consider breaking out the Converters into a separate .c file for inclusion? The code generator seems to take care of the ordering. Chuck

I noticed that the default dtype for the "ones" and "zeros" functions is now float, whereas it used to be int. Should this be noted at http://www.scipy.org/ReleaseNotes/NumPy_1.0 since it does break code (if you are using the array you creating with ones or zeros as indices into another array). -- David Grant http://www.davidgrant.ca

arr.dtype.kind is 'i' for dtype=unit !?

Hi, What are the possible values of arr.dtype.kind ? It seems that signed and unsigned are considered to be the same "kind" >>> arr=N.arange(10,dtype=N.uint) >>> arr.dtype.kind 'i' >>> arr.dtype.itemsize 8 (OK - this is just showing off our amd64 linux ;-) ) How can I distinguish signed from unsigned without having to list all possible cases explicitly ? nan adds lots of whitespace

NaN adds a lot of whitespace in the representation of a matrix. Without NaN: matrix([[1, 2], [3, 4]]) With NaN: matrix([[ nan, 2. ], [ 3. , 4. ]]) There's enough room for the wikipedia entry for nan.

In what order would you like argsort to sort the values -inf, nan, inf? In numpy 1.0b1 nan is always left where it began: EXAMPLE 1 >> x matrix([[ inf], [ -inf], [ nan]]) >> x[x.argsort(0),:] matrix([[ -inf], [ inf], [ nan]]) EXAMPLE 2 >> x matrix([[ nan], [ inf], [ -inf]]) >> x[x.argsort(0),:] matrix([[ nan], [ -inf], [ inf]]) I would like nan to be in the middle between -inf and inf.

Travis, Is this intentional? In [77]: arange(5, dtype=int)/0 Out[77]: array([0, 0, 0, 0, 0]) It looks deliberate because all zeros are returned, but it might be better if it raised an exception. Chuck
