matplotlib is breaking numpy

There is definitely something wrong with matplotlib/numpy. Consider the following >from numpy import * >mydata=memmap('map.dat',dtype=float64,mode='w+',shape=56566500) > del mydata I can now remove the file map.dat with (from the command line) $rm map.dat However If I plot mydata before the line > del mydata I can't get rid of the file until I exit python!! Does matplotlib keep a reference to the data? How can I remove this reference? Mathew

Solaris Sparc build broken

I'm getting the following from r7603 on Solaris Sparc -- somehow related to not having a long double version of next after available. matplotlib and numpy cause MemoryError

Hi I have a line of matplotlib code -self.ax.plot(plot_data,mif) that causes the line -self.data=numpy.zeros(shape=dims) to throw a MemoryError exception. (if I comment out the first line I get no error.) This is on a windows xp machine with latest numpy and the latest matplotlib. I have a feeling this may be a nightmare to figure out what matplotlib and/or numpy are doing wrong. Any ideas where I can start? Mathew

lstsq illegal instruction

Hi all, Whenever I run numpy.linalg.lstsq with a xs parameter with both dimensions larger than 128, I get an "Illegal instruction" and python dies completely. It happens with both the Ubuntu jaunty standard numpy 1.2.1, and a recent svn 1.4.0.dev7727, but it doesn't seem to happen on any other machines. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this? It's most annoying. combinatorial operations on a pair of arrays

The title of this e-mail is probably misleading so let me just show some code: from numpy import * A=array([[1,2],[2,3],[3,4]]) B=array([[2,2],[3,3]]) C=zeros(A.shape) for i in xrange(len(A)): C[i]=sum(A[i]**B) print C What I want to do is eliminate the for loop and rely on numpy internals, but I'm not sure how to do this most efficiently. The fundamental aspect of the operation is that the array C is constructed by applying each subarray B to each subarray of A (i.e. all permutations) and then summing over a subset.

Unexpected attribute error

Is it by design that "numpy.sqrt(None)" raises an "AttributeError: sqrt"? This was confusing because there was an attribute lookup of 'sqrt' in numpy right there in the expression I typed, but that was not the attribute that python was complaining about. I presume that numpy.sqrt didn't know what to do with None, so it looked up a .sqrt in it or something... but I presume this only in hindsight now that I figured out the problem--I didn't mean to take the sqrt of None in the first place. How about adding some information to the AttributeError, such as the object on which the lookup failed (here None, as opposed to the numpy module). Hi, A quick remainder: the trunk will be closed for 1.4.0 changes within a few hours. After that time, the trunk should only contain things which will be in 1.5.0, and the 1.4.0 changes will be in the 1.4.0 branch, which should contain only bug fixes. cheers, David

Installing numpy under cygwin

Hello. I am currently trying to install the latest version of NumPy for my cygwin Python, and I am having problems... I have downloaded the source, and unzipped and untarred it in my home directory.
