NumPy 1.21.3 released

Hi All, On behalf of the NumPy team I am pleased to announce the release of NumPy 1.21.3. NumPy 1.21.3 is a maintenance release that fixes a few bugs discovered after the 1.21.2 release. It also provides 64 bit Python 3.10.0 wheels. Note a few oddities about the Python 3.10 wheels: - There are no 32 bit wheels for Windows, Mac, or Linux. - The Mac Intel builds are only available in universal2 wheels. The Python versions supported in this release are 3.7-3.10. If you want to compile your own version using gcc-11 you will need to use gcc-11.2+ to avoid problems. Wheels can be downloaded from PyPI <https://pypi.org/project/numpy/1.21.3/>; source archives, release notes, and wheel hashes are available on Github <https://github.com/numpy/numpy/releases/tag/v1.21.3>. Linux users will need pip >= 0.19.3 in order to install manylinux2010 and manylinux2014 wheels. A recent version of pip is needed to install the universal2 macos wheels. *Contributors* A total of 7 people contributed to this release. dtype=(bool) vs dtype=bool

See the following testing in IPython shell: In [6]: import numpy as np In [7]: a = np.array([1], dtype=(bool)) In [8]: b = np.array([1], dtype=bool) In [9]: a Out[9]: array([ True]) In [10]: b Out[10]: array([ True]) It seems that dtype=(bool) and dtype=bool are both correct usages. I've written the following python code snippet in pycharm: ```python import numpy as np from numpy import pi, sin a = np.array([1], dtype=bool) if np.in|vert(a) == ~a: print('ok') ``` When putting the point/cursor in the above code snippet at the position denoted by `|`, I would like to see information similar to that provided by `pycharm`, as shown in the following screenshots: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/11155854/137619512-674e0eda-7564-… https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/11155854/137619524-a0b584a3-1627-… But I wonder if there are any other python packages/tools that can help me achieve this goal? Python 3.10 update

Hi All, A quick update on the status of wheels for Python 3.10 on Mac and Windows. The azure folks have dropped 32 bit Python 3.10 for Windows, so, unless we complain, there will be no 32 bit versions for 3.10. Likewise, multibuild only supports universal2 wheels Python 3.10 on Mac, so make sure your pip version is up to date. Curiously, there are Mac builds for arm64 (OS_X 11), but amd64 is a no go. This may be a bug in multibuild. There is currently a problem, about two weeks old, of travis-ci flaking out on arm64 builds. I don't know what to do about that, sometimes it runs, but mostly it fails. We should probably look into finding another provider for that platform. It would be nice if someone could test the nightly universal2 wheels for Mac, they can be installed with pip install -i https://pypi.anaconda.org/scipy-wheels-nightly/simple numpy Chuck

Hi All, Today both of the python.org mailing lists I'm subscribed to (numpy and scipy-dev) got the same kind of link shortener spam. I assume all the mailing lists started getting these, and that these won't go away for a while. Is there any way to prevent these, short of moderating emails from new list members? Assuming the engine even supports that. There aren't many emails, especially from new members, and I can't think of other ways that ensure no false positives in filtering. Since maintainer time is precious, I can volunteer to moderate such emails if needed. Cheers, András

What happened to the numpy.random documentation?

Hi All, The documentation of Numpy's submodules used to have a fairly standard structure as shown here in the 1.16 documentation: https://docs.scipy.org/doc/numpy-1.16.1/reference/routines.random.html Now the same page in the API documentation looks like this: https://numpy.org/doc/stable/reference/random/index.html While I appreciate the expository text in the new documentation about how the generators work, this new version is much less useful as a reference to the API. It seems like it might fit better in the user manual rather than the API reference. From my perspective it seems like the new version of the documentation is harder to navigate in terms of finding information quickly (more scrolling, harder to get a bird's eye view of functions in various submodules, etc). Has anyone else had a similar reaction to the changes? I teach a couple of courses in scientific computing and bioinformatics and my students seem to also struggle to get a sense of what the different modules offer based on the new version of the documentation. For now, I'm referring them to the old (1.70) reference manuals as a better way to get acquainted with the libraries. Cheers, Paul Magwene
