It is not specific to Thomas' machine, I had the same problems on all
my machines running windows xp. I believe it is a problem related to
path idiosyncraties/encoding, but I could not find a way to solve it
(I did not try hard).

I think this is an ongoing problem with the temp files on windows. ISTR a thread about that some time back.
