This will work: b=zeros ((3,3)) b[:2,:2] = b[:2,:2] + a[1:,1:]
You need to know the size of a to use this scheme.
How about this: b = 0*a b[:-1, :-1] = a[1:, 1:] Works for any shape and type of a.
