I really don't see any advantage of matrices over arrays for teaching. I prefer to teach linear algebra with arrays.

I would also like matrices to disappear from numpy. But then one would need a new implementation of scipy.sparse, which is (very unfortunately) matrix-based at the moment.

Only if you want NumPy to be unusable when teaching
basic linear algebra.  I believe that would damage
the speed at which NumPy use spreads.
