Can we also do a rc for 1.7.2?
The number of fixes that went in is not small and they should be tested
by some users before release.

I was planning on that right after 1.8 is done. I still need to backport your little cpp fixes, the changes since 1.7 make that a bit tricky. Then there is checking for other missing backports...
