Hi there,
I have finally prepared and uploaded a test repository containing numpy code:
http://github.com/numpy/numpy_svn
Please check in particular that your account information are correctly recorded in the log. A few informations:
- the repo was converted from a local svn mirror to git through svn-all-fast-export - svn tags are put into the svntags "namespace", and only maintenance branches have been kept - "out of branch" branches (f2py, vendor, etc...) have not been included. They become separate git repos (not uploaded).
DO NOT COMMIT ANYTHING TO THIS REPO - this is only for testing, any change made to this repo WILL be lost,
cheers,
David

Some observations based on a quick look:
1)
$ git branch -r origin/maintenance/1.1.x_5227 origin/maintenance/1.5.x/doc/numpybook/comparison/pyrex origin/maintenance/1.5.x/doc/pyrex origin/svntags/0.9.6_2236
These don't look right?
2)
Would it be possible to get real Git tags for the tags in SVN? Perhaps in addition to the svntag/
Although, I must admit, I don't remember any more the rationale for the svntags/ thing. Was this because some of them contain commits that are not part of any other branch? How much do we lose if we just drop the svntags/* stuff (it clutters up the branch -r output)?
3)
Some people have their SVN commit account in format forename.surname -- it might be OK to translate this to "Forename Surname" even if we do not hear back from them?
alan.mcintyre chris.barker chris.burns christoph.weidemann darren.dale paul.ivanov tim_hochberg
Also, Ralf has the Git ID in format "rgommers <...email...>", but I guess that's correct?
For other people (eg Pierre GM, Michael Droettboom) who might still be active contributors in the future, it could be nice to know what Git ID they are going to use.

The 1.5.* are weird, especially the doc/* ones, I am not sure what the issue is. The weird one in svntags is because the tag has been "recreated". We could just remove them a posteriori, but it bothers me a bit not to know where they are coming from.
Would it be possible to get real Git tags for the tags in SVN?
Yes, but the convertor manual advised against it, because svn has no real notion of tags: the git tag and and the svn tag may not correpond to the same tree, and it seems there are a lot of funky corner cases (unlikely to happen in numpy, though).
One could just put the release tags, with a manual check ?

We don't lose much if we put the tags as git tags.

Sure

Indeed. I would confess that's one of the main reason to publish the temporary repository, to make the transition that much more real :)

Hmm, this may just be my crappy internet connection but:
$ git clone http://github.com/numpy/numpy_svn.git Initialized empty Git repository in /Users/rgommers/Code/tmp/numpy_svn/.git/ remote: Counting objects: 47413, done. remote: Compressing objects: 100% (9781/9781), done. error: RPC failed; result=18, HTTP code = 200MiB | 3 KiB/s
Will try again tomorrow.
Also, Ralf has the Git ID in format "rgommers<...email...>", but I guess that's correct?
My checkout failed so can't check this, but that looks a little odd. My .gitconfig is normal: user] name = rgommers email = <...myemail...>
Looking with gitk in my numpy/scipy repos the ID after my commits looks the same as those of others.
Cheers, Ralf

I tried to say that typically people write their full name rather than a user account (rgommers) in the "name=" field.
But anything is fine here, as long as it's consistent :)

Ok, the issue ended up being a wrong regex to filter branches.

Some more notes:
- 1.1.x branch is missing.
This is maybe because in SVN something ugly was done with this branch?
- Something is still funny with some of the tags
$ (for tag in `git tag`; do V=`git log --oneline $tag \ |head -n200|wc -l`; echo "$V $tag"; done)| sort -n 2 v1.1.0 2 v1.1.1 2 v1.1.1rc1 2 v1.1.1rc2 3 v1.0b1 200 v0_2_0 200 v0_2_2 ...
So v1.1.0, v1.1.1, v1.1.1rc1, v1.1.1rc2, and v1.0b1 are missing their history. Maybe this has to do with the missing branch?
If you do "git log" on these tags:
$ git log --oneline v1.1.0 4706b10 updating version info bfa0c24 tagging 1.1.0 final
Since the rest of the history is missing, you cannot do
$ git log v1.1.0..v1.2.0
which works for the other tags.
Otherwise, the tags are pretty nice now, and "git branch -r" is really clean. I think we're getting there!
Cheers, Pauli

No, that's because I made a mistake the rule file...
Something is still funny with some of the tags
$ (for tag in `git tag`; do V=`git log --oneline $tag \ |head -n200|wc -l`; echo "$V $tag"; done)| sort -n 2 v1.1.0 2 v1.1.1 2 v1.1.1rc1 2 v1.1.1rc2 3 v1.0b1 200 v0_2_0 200 v0_2_2 ...
That's exactly the problem with converting svn "tags" to real tags - there is no reason that the tag corresponds to something in a branch with the way svn works. But here the issue is a mistake one my end. We have a small enough number of tags so that we can check them by hand here.
I am updating the repo as we speak,
David

Compared this against git-svn produced repository. There are a number of commits missing from the early history, apparently because numpy trunk was moved around in SVN.
