Is getting spammed with email on every event really the best we can do? Is there no better way to notify people who hate email? (RSS feed?)
This is certainly doable, if we go with Discourse the defaults for new users (e.g. not retroactive to existing users) are fully adjustable.
Not a major consideration, but "retroactivity" is one thing that Mailman 3 hopes to get right (current GSoC project). Some default styles (collections of option settings) will be installed as a fallback for users with no explicit setting, some default styles will be copied to users' profiles. The former can be changed globally (including existing users), the latter would apply only to new users.
