appspace considerations and genrpy

Hi Armin, all, finally I realized that I'm doing way too much in my translation efforts. It happened to me when I turned md5.py into RPython using my prototypic genrpy transformer, that this is in many cases not needed at all. If you look at md5.py, you'll see that it *is* already almost restricted Python. I can just move almost all functions over to the interpreter level. In a sense, md5 and sha do not really belong to the appspace modules. Instead, they are almost ready internal implementations. Just the interface to the exported objects and methods needs to be created, to provide the importable builtin module. How do we handle such things? I guess such almost-interpreter level things should have a different folder. The published module would simply be filled with app2interp gateway calls to the internal stuff, or, well, directly writing down the wrappers would be fine as well, I guess. So my idea for cases like such is: Instead of transforming everything from appspace into interpreter level, we can use stuff almost as-is. Only non-trivial datatypes or unsupported features need to be translated from app to interp. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I was just shocked when I read the transformed MD5 source, like "hell, what am I doing here, this is no app code at all!" :-) Any ideas how to express the necessary actions? Do we move those files elsewhere? Last week Paul and I participated to the Calibre conference in Den Haag, Netherlands. Paul was invited to make the keynote speech. Some high-ranking EU commissioners were presents. They were very interested in open source and knew all the details about the Pypy project. dictionaries in RPython

What is the current attitude to dictionaries in RPython? At one point I thought the attitude was "constant dictionaries, constantly known string-only keys" but in particular pypy.interpreter.argument isn't even vaguely close to this measure. This is what crashed translate_pypy after about 110 minutes of CPU time :) -- there's an assert that the item in aDict[some_item] is constant. I think to cope effectively with argument.py the SomeDict annotation needs quite a lot of work. right-dragging the graph

Hi Armin, I thought it was an oversight that the image is not fixed under the cursor when right-dragging it, and I thought to repair this. But I saw self.viewer.shiftoffset(-2*dx, -2*dy) in process_MouseMotion (graphdisplay.py), so this is probably intended behavior? binascii.py in pure python

Hi there, I checked the list of missing C modules on the wiki pages. I could contribute some code for binascii.py. Some time ago i started porting the C module to python. It's halfway done, but some functions are pretty usable and have some test coverage. Right now, I don't have time to download pypy and play with it, so I don't know if there are any issues with integrating my code. It would be best if I could develop and test the module on CPython.
