Hi there Google is doing Summer of Code again this year: http://code.google.com/soc/ It would be possible to enter PyPy directly as a mentoring organization this time, instead of going through the PSF. Last year, student slots were given to mentoring organizations proportional to the number of applications. If there are enough applications for PyPy proper that might bring more students on board than taking slots from the PSF pool as last year (but maybe PyPy's influence in the PSF is big enough, and this doesn't really matter). What is the status of the Summer of PyPy idea, btw? Nik

sounds good.

it hasn't been pursued much lately because it ran concurrent to many other issues we (and i) needed to sort out. There was considerable interest, though, something like 10-15 people mailed me and the list here. best, holger

That's a good news! I'd like to participate to soc for doing pypy's stuffs, I hope I'll able to apply (and to win :-)). ciao Anto

If things are this way again, I suspect that PyPy would get more SoC slots by being part of the PSF (it's also less work :). In either case, I suspect the bottleneck would be finding sufficient mentors. Cheers, mwh -- This is not to say C++ = bad, Lisp = good. Neal Norwitz just posted this on py-dev: --------------- We've only got a short time to get setup for Google's Summer of Code. We need to start identifying mentors and collecting ideas for students to implement. We have the SimpleTodo list (http://wiki.python.org/moin/SimpleTodo), but nothing on the SoC page yet (http://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode). I can help manage the process from inside Google, but I need help gathering mentors and ideas. I'm not certain of the process, but if you are interested in being a mentor, send me an email. I will try to find all the necessary info and post here again tomorrow. Pass the word! I hope all mentors from last year will return again this year. Can someone take ownership of drumming up mentors and ideas? We also need to spread the word to c.l.p and beyond. --------- tjr

This is a list of plausible candidates: Armin Samuele Carl Michael Arre Anders L Aurelien Ludovic Adrien Holger Eric I think the only other ones who are familiar enough with the codebase to be mentors are Christian and Richard, who are both too involved in other stuff to be reliable mentors. I'd suggest extending this weeks sync-meeting to give room for finding out who is actually available and not too unwilling to be mentor. ;-) Making a list of suggested topics would be on the agenda as well. Preferredly speaking for myself, I feel absolutely able to do mentoring, if the topic falls into my areas. I just asked Richard, and he might be interested, too.
