Hi All, as you know, the python community in Zimbabwe had issues getting funded for their first python conference. A crowdfunding campaign has then been setup to keep this project going. Visit https://onepercentclub.com/en/projects/pyzim and help as you can, everything count. Don't hesitate to share the link in your networks (and follow them on twitter <https://twitter.com/pycon_zim> :)) You can also help in many other ways, feel free to contact them directly. The official conference website is https://pyzim.github.io/ . I'm personally happy about that initiative, good luck pyzim! On a different note, please join me congratulating new Django Software Foundation members on being nominated. Kudos to Helen (UK), Aisha (Nigeria), Anna (Zimbabwe), Humphrey (Zimbabwe), Jessica (Namibia) and Loek (Netherlands). "[they] represent the way the Django Software Foundation is starting to recognize a more diverse community of people who can contribute in many different ways, and a genuinely global membership, including five more African members." (full post available here <https://www.djangoproject.com/weblog/2016/aug/17/welcome-new-DSF-members/>) Cheers -Ibrahim

Dear Anna, Humphrey I can only imagine the disappointment and frustration that you must be going through. Keep being positive, you are not alone in this, we are all thinking about you. Hi Daniele, I hope I find you well. Please find below a quote of part of the email which explains how it was communicated to us: "Unfortunately, the Python Software Foundation is currently unable to fund your grant request ... due to the OFAC sanctions levied against Zimbabwe. We have tried to find other options, but because of these US Treasury OFAC sanctions, any wire sent to Zimbabwe has to be under a general OFAC license. Our experience with OFAC is that the documentation requirements are rather extreme, the penalties are heavy, and any documents submitted will be very carefully scrutinized by the banks. https://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/Programs/ Documents/zimb.pdf At this time, we have concluded that this is too risky for the PSF. We are very sorry, but we will have to withdraw our financial support for your grant request." This was for a grant request which PSF had pledged but later withdrew for the reasons cited above. Thank you. Hi Loek, Thank you for your brilliant idea. Could we respond you tomorrow after sitting down with Humphrey so we agree on the final budget as we have changed positions frequently on the issue because of funding challenges? PyDay Zimbabwe
by Humphrey Aug. 12, 2016

Aug. 12, 2016

Dear Pythonistas, Just wanted to notify you that we will be holding a PyDay Zimbabwe event mid-November this year. We wanted to host a PyCon but we found out that the time we have is not enough to hold such an event. We have however settled for a one-day event which we have called PyDay Zimbabwe. We are facing a mammoth task in making our event possible as we have just found out that we can no longer receive funding from the Python Software Foundation. We were organizing Django Girls Masvingo, and we received an email from the P.S.F in which they said they could no longer sponsor our event as our country, Zimbabwe is under sanctions from the United States Government. This has left us in a very difficult position as we held the P.S.F to be one of our most reliable backers. This is even worse as it implies that we might not even get help from American companies. In light of the above i am appealing for help from anyone on this forum, on how we can get other sponsors, even from outside the U.S. We don't want to kill the momentum that was created PyCon Namibia 2016. We are looking for help to cover the costs of running the event and 'maybe' even bringing a Keynote speaker from the region or beyond. let me hasten to say that we are not looking for financial support only. We would also appreciate in the form of ideas, logistics, or even with our website which is provisionally at PyDay Zimbabwe <https://pyzim.github.io/> If you can help in any way please get in touch with us at the following email: zim.pycon(a)gmail.com. Regards Humphrey <https://pyzim.github.io/> <https://pyzim.github.io/>

PyConZA 2016 - Second Call for Speakers
by Neil Muller Aug. 1, 2016

Aug. 1, 2016

This is a second call for talk proposals for PyConZA 2016. While we've already received several great talk proposals, we still have a number of open talk slots and are thus keen to see further talk submissions. If you would like to give a presentation, please register at https://za.pycon.org/ and submit your proposal, following the instructions at https://za.pycon.org/talks/submit-talk . PyConZA 2016 will take place 6th & 7th October at The River Club, in Observatory, Cape Town, South Africa. There will be two days of talks, and we will hold sprints on the 8th & 9th of October.i For more details, please visit https://za.pycon.org/ . The presentation slots will be 30 minutes long, with an additional 10 minutes for discussion at the end. Shared sessions are also possible. The presentations will be in English. PyConZA offers a mentorship program for inexperienced speakers. If you would like assistance preparing your submission, email team(a)za.pycon.org with a rough draft of your talk proposal and we'll find a suitable experienced speaker to act as a mentor. In addition to talks, we are also looking for proposals for tutorials, demos, sprints and open spaces. Tutorials are intended to be more in-depth introductions to a topic with a limited number of attendees. Tutorial sessions can be up to 90 minutes long. Demos are cool things for attendees to see and interact with. Open spaces are open discussion forums where communities with a common interest gather to present views, ask questions and meet people interested in the topic. Sprints are coding efforts and hack days that happen after the conference. There's no need to register a sprint or open space topic upfront, but doing so allows us to advertise them during the conference. -- Neil Muller On behalf of the PyConZA organising committee
