I have put together a new release of AVPython and published it on my web page. The new version works much the same as before, but is now compiled for Python 2.0. The source code is now included (under an MIT-style open source license) so you can easily compile it for 1.6 or 1.5.2 if you want, or enhance it in any other way you choose.
