Ah, danke, kannte ich noch nicht. Die Syntax-Erweiterungen kannte ich schon, aber "subprocess" kommt mir gerade sehr gelegen (muss ich aber noch mit twisted verpacken) . Die Site gehört wohl auch in die Liste für jeden deutschen Anfänger.
Ich kann's nicht wirklich beurteilen - auf der twisted-Mailingliste wird immer wieder mal über die konzeptionellen Fehler von asyncore referiert. Der Umstieg ist schwierig, wenn man dann doch mehr braucht, als asyncore bietet.
Also ich habe mir mal einen minimalen Server sowohl mit asynchat als auch mit Twisted geschrieben. Ich war überrascht wie ähnlich sich die Codes waren, hatten beide sowohl 'Protocols' auch auch 'Factories'. Twisted gefällt mir seit Version 2 aber besser als 1.x, da es nun scheinbar komplett in Python geschrieben ist :)
Für einfache Client-Server-Lösungen sind sie vielleicht ähnlich. Ich kenne asyncore allerdings nicht wirklich, weil ich gleich mit twisted angefangen habe. Twisted bietet für viele Standardprobleme (z.B. Webserver, SSH, Chat) schon fertige Lösungen, integriert sich recht gut in fremde Event Loops (z.B. vom GUI), verwaltet Threads und Prozesse sehr komfortabel (sonst könnte ich nicht damit umgehen, deferToThread ist genau das Richtige für mich ;-) ) usw.
