Well, as I pointed out, the best way to do this is to add sys/types.h, sys/stat.h, and stat.h to the AC_CHECK_HEADER() macro in configure.in. The HAVE_SYS_TYPES_H macro and friends could then be checked. PC/wince_config.h (or whatever it is called) would just #undef the HAVE_* macros. The underlying issue here, is that autoconf can take care of these things for us quite easily -- that we don't need manual maintenance of the macros. Protecting __name__ &c.

Would it be too much trouble to prevent replacing double-underscore attributes like __name__ and __file__? It seems to me that the main problem is that comp.lang.python is too big to follow. So why not split it? I don't know the right subgroups, but if (say) comp.lang.python.language focusses on the core language, it might enable people to start reading it again. I asked this twice on c.l.p, one year ago and two years ago, and the answer was always "the traffic is too low". I used to subscribe to the NeXTSteap groups, and splitting worked really well there. - Andy Robinson

Adding LDAP to the Python core... ?!

Would there be interest in adding the python-ldap module (http://sourceforge.net/project/?group_id=2072) to the core distribution ? If yes, I think we should approach David Leonard and ask him if he is willing to donate the lib (which is in the public domain) to the core. FYI, LDAP is a well accepted standard network protocol for querying address and user information.
