dumbdbm.py

just had reason to be looking at dumbdbm.py - perhaps "terminallybrokendbm.py" would be a better name. There's a whole host of "oh. my. god." type things in there that are just broken, with massive dataloss problems if you end up (innocently) getting it from anydbm.py. I'm going to fix it either this arvo/evening or tomorrow, but it really shouldn't go out as part of 2.2 in it's current form. Is it too late to consider either fixing it or removing it from anydbm's list? Anthony

Mac OS X sys.platform value

Folks, Apple "wisely" changed their uname version numbering scheme with a micro-release (10.1.1). Of course, nobody cares about this, except Python, which stuffs the version into sys.platform, from where it is used by a gazillion things. Anyway, where sys.platform used to be "darwin1" upto and including 10.1.0 it is now "darwin5" for 10.1.1 (and it will go up to "darwin6" for 10.2, etc). Need help with distutils

Andrew Kuchling just unassigned from himself a whole slew of distutils-related bug reports. It appears that neither Andrew nor Greg Ward (the original maintainer) has the time to maintain this code any more. No-one at PythonLabs understands it or has the time to learn about it. Comparing sequences ?!

I just tried (1,2,3) == [1,2,3] and found that the compare returns false. Is that intended ? Background: 1.0 == 1 == 1L also works, so it seems natural that comparing sequences of different types should work in the same way. Ok, after a bit of an unfortunate break I'm back into the backporting. My current plan is to have a release candidate for 2.1.2 due a couple of days before Christmas, and then try to get it tested as much as possible before a release either in the week between christmas/new year (not optimal) or shortly after. Only found one potential problem: mimetypes.py:405: No global (sys) found This is inside usage() which presumably should only be used internally. sys is imported if __name__ == '__main__'. So the problem can only be triggered if usage() is called by external source. Possible fixes are: sys could be locally imported in usage() sys could be imported at the module scope usage could be made _usage() to denote it's private Neal

nested scopes confusion

I would have expected the following code to print 1, 2, ..., 9. Instead it prints 25, 25, 25, .. 25. def functions(): result = [] for i in range(10): def mth(*args): return i result.append(mth) i = 25 return result for mth in functions(): print mth() Reading PEP227, I can (barely) understand why it behaves this way. How do I achieve the desired effect? Note that the default argument trick (def mth(i=i): ...) does not work because *args is present. Thomas

Building PyXPCOM from Mozilla source/ImportError: cannot import name _xpcom

Apologize if this is not the right group for this question. I am trying to build PyXPCOM from Mozilla 0.9.6 source tree on Win 2000. I have managed to do make successfully and I can import xpcom. When I import xpcom._xpcom, I get "ImportError: cannot import name _xpcom" and the path includes Mozilla bin directory. The configure.html file hints at something being wrong with _xpcom(_d).pyd. How do I fix this problem? TIA, Praki

Guido had mentioned awhile ago about possibly adding pychecker to Tools. If people want it in, what needs to be done? There are 2 differences between the last released version of pychecker and the current CVS. 1 is a bug fix for inconsistent return types and the other is a new warning for local variables which shadow globals. Folks, I've set my various python-related subscriptions to nomail for the time being. Both of our web servers (www.musi-cal.com and www.mojam.com) were recently broken into and then used as launching points for attacks on other machines. They are both offline (probably for good). What's the reasoning behind putting -DINET6 into the default compiler options of the generic Makefile ? I'm just asking because such a define will be inherited by all extensions being compiled with distutils and the Makefile.pre.in setup process... sounds like trouble if you ask me.
