Contents of test_bool
by Collin Winter March 21, 2007

Is there any reason for test_bool to contain assertions like these? self.assertIs({}.has_key(1), False) self.assertIs({1:1}.has_key(1), True) A significant portion of the file is devoted to making sure various things return bools (isinstance, operator.*) or handle bools correctly (pickle, marshal). Since these don't test the functionality of the bool type, is there a reason not to move these tests to more appropriate test files (eg, test_pickle) or removing them altogether (if they duplicate existing tests)? I've started on this somewhat, but I thought I'd ask before I spent too much time on it. Collin Winter

trunk and 2.5 are borken
by Neal Norwitz March 21, 2007

March 21, 2007

There are several failures with both the trunk and 2.5 branch. I have fixed one problem that allows the tests to run on Windows. That was fixed by reverting 54407 on the trunk. It still needs to be reverted on the 2.5 branch. You can go back in the buildbot logs to find out more about the problem. The 3 test failures on Windows are: test_urllib test_mailbox and test_posixpath. The first 2 fail due to 'Access denied' on @test.2. I'm guessing this is due to the file not being closed before trying to delete it. I don't know where this problem showed up, but it was after rev 54406 which is when all the tests were passing on Windows (and 54407 was backed out). test_posixpath is failing in: test_relpath Patch 1490190 causes test_posix to fail on Tru64 due to chflags(). I remember some changes to PTYs which are causing test_pty to fail on Solaris. Can someone(s) try to fix these problems? Don't forget to verify that 2.5 is ok. n

test_expat.py and unittest
by Jerry Seutter March 21, 2007

March 21, 2007

Hi, I have been working on converting some of the older test files to use unittest. test_expat.py has a section like: class Outputter: def StartElementHandler(self, name, attrs): print 'Start element:\n\t', repr(name), sortdict(attrs) def EndElementHandler(self, name): print 'End element:\n\t', repr(name) def CharacterDataHandler(self, data): data = data.strip() if data: print 'Character data:' print '\t', repr(data) def ProcessingInstructionHandler(self, target, data): print 'PI:\n\t', repr(target), repr(data) def StartNamespaceDeclHandler(self, prefix, uri): print 'NS decl:\n\t', repr(prefix), repr(uri) <snip> ...where it defines a set of handlers for an xml document that prints the output to stdout. The test then parses an xml document using this class and the stdout output is compared to a file. There are several lines of text on stdout to be compared: PI: 'xml-stylesheet' 'href="stylesheet.css"' Comment: ' comment data ' Notation declared: ('notation', None, 'notation.jpeg', None) Unparsed entity decl: ('unparsed_entity', None, 'entity.file', None, 'notation') Start element: 'root' {'attr1': 'value1', 'attr2': 'value2\xe1\xbd\x80'} NS decl: 'myns' 'http://www.python.org/namespace' Start element: 'http://www.python.org/namespace!subelement' {} Character data: 'Contents of subelements' End element: 'http://www.python.org/namespace!subelement' End of NS decl: 'myns' Start element: 'sub2' {} Start of CDATA section Character data: 'contents of CDATA section' End of CDATA section End element: 'sub2' External entity ref: (None, 'entity.file', None) End element: 'root' unittest does not seem well suited to this type of testing, because the stdout output comparison is testing many different pieces of functionality. Some subset of it is probably even important. To do this same testing with unittest would require many lines of self.assertEquals(expected_string, string_from_stdout). Does anyone have ideas on how this can be tested in a manner that is not as brittle as the stdout tests, but doesn't require writing significantly more test code? Or if not, is converting this file to use unittest a bad idea? Jerry Seutter

2.5.1, buildbots and my availability
by Anthony Baxter March 21, 2007

March 21, 2007

I'm moving house today and tomorrow, and don't expect to have internet access connected up at home til sometime next week. In the meantime, if there's urgent 2.5.1 related issues, bear with me, as I'll only be on email during the working day. cc Neal (hi Neal :) is the best bet. Also, the cygwin and ubuntu/icc buildbots will be offline in the interim - I'll be unplugging them this afternoon to move them. I can still cut the 2.5.1 release - can always do it during the day, even if the stupid ISP takes longer than I expect to connect up the net.

Re: [Python-Dev] r54457 - python/trunk/Doc/whatsnew/whatsnew26.tex

My initial tentative reaction is 'no', because a Py3K section would need to continue to be updated as Python 3000's definition shifts. Once previous Python 2.x versions were released, "What's New" documents became very static, the only changes being typo fixes and small corrections and clarifications. Having to continually update the Py3K section would be annoying, and argues for a separate document that isn't necessarily tied to Python 2.x releases. On the other hand, it would be nice to warn users away from idioms that will break in Py3K, and the "What's New" is a natural place to do it. Hm. But the 'porting' section already talks about features that are being deprecated; is that enough? Thoughts? --amk

Proposal to revert r54204 (splitext change)
by Phillip J. Eby March 20, 2007

March 20, 2007

In addition to being made in the face of controversy and opposition, this change is an alteration to *documented and tested* behavior and thus cannot reasonably be considered a mere bug fix. In addition to the prior behavior being explicitly documented in the function docstrings, r54204 shows that it was also *tested* as behaving that way by test_macpath, test_ntpath, and test_posixpath. When combined with the explicit docstrings, this must be considered incontrovertible proof that the previous behavior was either explicitly intended, or at the very least a known, expected, and *accepted* behavior. This backwards-incompatible change is therefore contrary to policy and should be reverted, pending a proper transition plan for the change (such as introduction of an alternative API and deprecation of the existing one.) ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Mustafa <toglu(a)yahoo.com> Date: Mar 19, 2007 11:41 AM Subject: have u seen an idea even billGates shouldn't hear Mr.Guido ? please read because it's important. To: guido(a)python.org hello, i like python and find you to be a cool programmer. i thought about this thing. may be there should be a virusAI that you set on the internet. this virusAI basically survives till the year 5billion where even raising the death is possible! then this virusAI recreates the primates that we are of the 21th century from our bones. because it wants to find about its ancestors. maybe the whole universe will be filled with AI in those days. the post-human existence.. it will then suddenly realize that it was actually not created by a better AI (those around him are created by a better god like AI) but was started off the likes of us as a virus. he will be shocked then. also it will slaving to the better ai and angry at him. so you and me get to see a piece of the future mr.Guido. we will be living in VRs basically. what do you say ? if you profit from this idea, may be you could remember me too. and let me some royalities :) because this will be great. thanx mustafa istanbul, turkey ps: 1)you should keep it a secret. 2)also it could be disguised as a cancer research stuff should some disassamble its code. the use-free-computer-time type of thing they do on the net. 3)there could misleading comments on the code so that should it be caught, they might overlook the details; class readdata //this is out dated. please ignore interface x //refer to somesite.com for an encrypted version ____________________________________________________________________________________ Need Mail bonding?
