trunc()

Can anyone explain to me why we need both trunc() and int()? We used to be very resistant to adding new built-ins and magic method protocols. In days not long past, this would have encountered fierce opposition. ISTM that numbers.py has taken on a life of its own and is causing non-essential offspring to sprout-up everywhere. Also, it seems that ABC is starting to evolve from an optional tool into something embedded in the language in a way that you can't escape it. I would prefer that it not be on the list of concepts that a beginner *must* know in order to be functional in the language. There are a handful of needs met by the numeric tower but they only warrant minimal changes to the language. Raymond P.S. Upcoming 2.5.2 release

It is my pleasure to announce that I have been appointed as the release manager for the upcoming releases. For 2.5.2, I would like to release a candidate on February 14, and the final version on February 21. As Guido already mentioned, this will be a bug fix release only; no new features allowed. Monkeypatching idioms -- elegant or ugly?

+1 on having established Python idioms for these techniques. While I don't know if there has ever been a formal definition of monkey patch, the term monkey patch came from guerilla patch, which came from two or more dynamic modifications to a class interfering with each other. These modifications were usually made by extension code (Zope add-on Products) to upstream code (the Zope framework), so I would define a monkey patch only as dynamic modifications made to a class with the *intent to change or correct behaviour in upstream code*. The term has also caught on with the a second definition of referring to any dynamic modification of class, regardless of intent though. I would perhaps call these methods something like: * add_method_to_class * extend_class This gives you a better idea of what they do, rather than use a term with a somewhat ambigous definition. With monkeypatch_method under the definition of "altering existing upstream behviour", I might expect it to raise an error if the method I was replacing on a class did not exist (e.g. upstream code was refactored so my patch no longer applied).

Sorry if this is a repeat. I don't remember seeing this in the various Python-related stuff I've received before (and no longer monitor c.l.py, only look at the weekly summary), though based on the dateline of the Slashdot item I saw (Jan 9) it should be old news. Apparently, in 2007 Python surged in the TIOBE Programming Community Index to #6, surpassing Perl: http://www.tiobe.com/tpci.htm It's got aways to go before it surpasses C++, but that's the next rung in the ladder... I'm a little suspicious of the data though. Given the huge popularity in AJAX tools I would have expected JavaScript to have increased in popularity, not decreased. Hmmm... And they have both Delphi and COBOL jumping in popularity by three rungs. At any rate, there you have it. Skip

ctypes issue

In python 2.5.1: from ctypes import * c = c_int(4) print c == 4 print c.value == 4 False True This seem unreasonable to me, and a big invitation to error.

Hi Travis, I have started the pep3118 implementation for ctypes. If you have time, could you please review <http://bugs.python.org/issue1971>, especially the tests in file Lib/ctypes/test/test_pep3118.py to ensure that I have understood and implemented the pep correctly? Thanks, Thomas
