I've read the Python-committers thread "Pulling from contributors repositories", which is about version control system. It seems there are two main issues, linear (cleaner) history on pushing, and NEWS merging. packaging was not getting installed

I just fixed Makefile.pre.in to install the packaging directory and all its subdirs. Without this `python3.3 -c 'import packaging'` fails from the installation target directory. I'm not sure the Fellowship intends for every subdir to get installed, so please double check. I just added everything that came from `find Lib/packaging -type d`. Cheers, -Barry

It's an extra character to type, and two more shift keyings, but brevity isn't always the soul of clarity.

Call For Topics for Python Language Summit at EuroPython 2011

Howdy howdy. Michael Foord can't make it to EuroPython this year--and congratulations to him on his new baby!--so he's asked me to chair the Python Language Summit in his stead. Although I have some suggested topics from Michael, I don't have any burning issues of my own to add to the docket. That's where *you* come in. If you have a topic you'd like to suggest, please email it privately to me (larry at hastings dot org) along with an estimate of how long you think it'll take to discuss. Please have all suggestions to me no later than Friday June 17th. Also, please include the phrase "Python Language Summit" in the subject line, in case it gets caught in my spam filters. Python 3.x and bytes

The bytes type in Python 3 does not feel very consistent. For example: --> some_var = 'abcdef' --> some_var 'abcdef' --> some_var[3] 'd' --> some_other_var = b'abcdef' --> some_other_var b'abcdef' --> some_other_var[3] 100 On the one hand we have the 'bytes are ascii data' type interface, and on the other we have the 'bytes are a list of integers between 0 - 256' interface. And trying to use the two is not intuitive: --> some_other_var[3] == b'd' False When I'm parsing a .dbf file and extracting field types from the byte stream, I'm not thinking, "okay, 67 is a Character field" -- what I'm thinking is, "b'C' is a Character field". Considering that ord() still works fine, I'm not sure why it was done this way. Is there code out there that is using this "list of int's" interface, or is there time to make changes to bytes? ~Ethan~

Implement Aspect-oriented programming

For example, the logging module is not very useful right now, as it requires sprinkling small one-liners all over my code - not exactly ideal. Why not take a page from aspect-oriented programming and allow for injection of code with point cuts?

On behalf of the Python development team, I'm sanguine to announce a release candidate for the fourth bugfix release for the Python 3.1 series, Python 3.1.4. Since the 3.1.4 release candidate 2 weeks ago, there have been three changes: 1. test_zipfile has been fixed on systems with an ASCII filesystem encoding. 2. pyexpat.__version__ has be changed to be the Python version. 3. A regression from 2.7.1 in the handling of comments in the netrc module has been resolved. (see issue #12009). 3.1.4 will the last bug fix release in the 3.1 series before 3.1. After 3.1.4, 3.1 will be in security-only fix mode. The Python 3.1 version series focuses on the stabilization and optimization of the features and changes that Python 3.0 introduced. For example, the new I/O system has been rewritten in C for speed. File system APIs that use unicode strings now handle paths with undecodable bytes in them. Other features include an ordered dictionary implementation, a condensed syntax for nested with statements, and support for ttk Tile in Tkinter.
