Mercurial will prevent you from committing before you have solved conflicts, so I'm not sure what this brings. "hg res -l" is the command to remember when you want to list files with conflicts. HTMLParser and HTML5

Hello all, I wanted to ask a few questions and start a discussion about HTML5 support within the HTMLParser class(es). Over on issue 670664, an inconsistency with the way browsers and the HTMLParser parse script and style tags was discovered. Currently, HTMLParser adheres strictly to the HTML4 standard, which says that these tags should exit CDATA mode when the start of *any* closing tag is found. No browsers, to my knowledge, have ever supported this (at least in the 21st century). Instead, all browsers implement the behavior described in the HTML5 spec, which states that script tags should exit their "raw text mode" when the full closing tag for that element is encountered. The repercussions of adhering to the HTML4 standard in HTMLParser are somewhat serious: a good number of documents will either encounter exceptions for broken markup (which aren't actually broken). Libraries like Beautiful Soup (which depend on HTMLParser) are also affected, requiring the use of hacks just to get the document to parse at all. Rather than bore you all with another paragraph about how HTML4 is terrible, feel free to look at the issue (http://bugs.python.org/issue670664), which quite thoroughly outlines the pros and cons of this particular change. Any feedback/input on the proposed changes is welcome. So here are my questions: - What plans, if any, are there to support HTML5 parsing behaviors, since the HTML5 spec effectively describes current web browser behavior? - What policies are in place for keeping parity with other HTML parsers (such as those in web browsers)? Given the semi-backward-compatible nature of HTML5's syntax, this seems like a rather unique problem that could use some more discussion. Thanks Matt Basta

Moving documentation of test.support into the devguide

I've opened issue 12652 to track this task. Proposed workflow: 1. First, the devguide incorporates the documentation 2. Then, I'll clean up the official docs and add pointers to the devguide instead The transition of the documentation into the devguide also has a few steps: 1. Move the reference of the utilities test.support provides. This reference documentation isn't complete (not all functions are documented), but can be completed later in the devguide. 2. (Optionally) incorporate the test-writing advice given in 25.5.1 into the devguide (which currently has only a short couple of paragraphs 3. Move any other information from the official docs (chapter 25) into the devguide, leaving only a section on running the tests (which should be identical to the relevant section in the devguide) and a pointer to the devguide. Issue #12652 now has a patch for step (1) above. Eli

I tried to include all remarks you made, and the PEP is now online: http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0400/ It's now unclear to me if the PEP will be accepted or rejected. Its use case is to enable or block accelerations for modules that optionally provide one. All the modules that currently use import_fresh_module are (afaik) always available (json, warnings, heapq), so raising SkipTest when the module is missing is not useful now. It returns None in the case an acceleration is missing, so e.g. in "cjson = import_fresh_module('json', fresh=['_json'])" cjson will be None and it will be possible to do things like @skipUnless(cjson, 'requires _json'). Here raising an ImportError will defeat (part of) the purpose of the function, i.e. avoiding: try: import _json except ImportError: _json = None and raising a SkipTest when the accelerations are missing is not an option if there are other tests (e.g. the tests for the Python implementation). These changes come from http://hg.python.org/cpython/rev/c1a12a308c5b . Before the change import_fresh_module was still returning the module (e.g. json) even when the acceleration (fresh=['_json']) was missing, and the C tests were run twice using the same pure-python module used for the Py ones.
