PEP 393 decode() oddity

PEP 393 (Flexible String Representation) is, without doubt, one of the pearls of the Python 3.3. In addition to reducing memory consumption, it also often leads to a corresponding increase in speed. In particular, the string encoding now in 1.5-3 times faster. But decoding is not so good. Here are the results of measuring the performance of the decoding of the 1000-character string consisting of characters from different ranges of the Unicode, for three versions of Python -- 2.7.3rc2, 3.2.3rc2+ and 3.3.0a1+. I think that the characters from the first half of the table must be decoded as quickly. The second sad oddity in that UTF-16 decoding in 3.3 is much slower than even in 2.7. Compared with 3.2 decoding is slower in 2-3 times. This is a considerable regress. UTF-32 decoding is also slowed down by 1.5-2 times. The fact that in some cases UTF-8 decoding also slowed, is not surprising. I believe, that on a platform with a 64-bit long, there may be other oddities. How serious a problem this is for the Python 3.3 release? I could do the optimization, if someone is not working on this already.

(By the way, the ".. module::" directive should only be in *one* place.) I would organize the mock, mock-patch, mock-magicmethods and mock-helpers as one file in Doc/library, and put the other two in Doc/howto, just as for logging. In general, I wouldn't mind splitting off more of the exemplary material from the main library docs, putting it in the howto section. Georg

Python install layout and the PATH on win32

Following up on conversations at PyCon, I want to bring up one of my personal hobby horses for change in 3.3: Fix install layout on Windows, with a side order of making the PATH work better. Short version: 1) The layout for the python root directory for all platforms should be as follows: stdlib = {base/userbase}/lib/python{py_version_short} platstdlib = {base/userbase}/lib/python{py_version_short} purelib = {base/userbase}/lib/python{py_version_short}/site-packages platlib = {base/userbase}/lib/python{py_version_short}/site-packages include = {base/userbase}/include/python{py_version_short} scripts = {base/userbase}/bin data = {base/userbase} 2) On Windows, the python executable (python.exe) will be in the "bin" directory. That way the installer can optionally add just that directory to the PATH to pick up all python-related executables (like pip, easy_install, etc). I have talked with a number of people at PyCon, including Tarek and MvL. Nobody objected, and several thought it was a good idea. Long version: As a bit of background,the layout for the Python root directory is different between platforms, varying in capitalization ("Include" vs. "include") and sometimes in the names of directories used ("Scripts" on Windows vs. "bin" most everywhere else). Further, the python version may or may not be included in the path to the standard library or not. In times past, this layout was driven by an INSTALL_SCHEMES dict deep in the guts of distutils, but with distutils2 it has been lifted out and placed within a config file (sysconfig.cfg). [1] Proposal #1 above deals with this inconsistency [1]. More concretely, it also makes it so that I can check in an entire environment into source control and work on it cross platform. As an additional wrinkle on Windows, the main python binary (python.exe) is placed in the python root directory, but all associated runnable files are placed in the "Scripts" directory, so that someone who wants to run both Python and a Python script needs to add both $PYTHON_ROOT and $PYTHON_ROOT/Scripts to the PATH. To add just a little more complication, the python binary is placed within the binaries directory when a virtualenv is created, leading to an inconsistency between regular python installs and virtualenvs. Proposal #2 again provides consistency between virtualenvs and regular Python installs, and on windows it allows a single directory to be placed on the PATH to get all python-related binaries to run. PEP czar for PEP 3144?

Does anyone object to me naming myself PEP czar for PEP 3144? I've collated the objections to the original proposal on a few different occasions throughout the (long!) PEP review process, and as noted in the Background section, the latest version of the PEP [1] has addressed the key concerns that were raised: - the "strict" flag for Network objects is gone (instead, the validation differences between IP Network and IP Interface definitions are handled as different classes with otherwise similar interfaces) - the factory function naming scheme follows PEP 8 - some properties have been given new names that make it clearer what kind of object they produce - the module itself has been given a new name (ipaddress) to avoid clashing with the existing ipaddr module on PyPI There's also basic-but-usable module documentation available (http://code.google.com/p/ipaddr-py/wiki/Using3144). So, unless there are any new objections, I'd like to: - approve ipaddress for inclusion in Python 3.3 - grant Peter Moody push access as the module maintainer - create a tracker issue to cover incorporating the new module into the standard library, documentation and test suite (There are still a few places in both the PEP and the preliminary documentation that say "ipaddr" instead of "ipaddress", but those can be cleaned up as the module gets integrated). I don't personally think the module API needs the provisional disclaimer as the core functionality has been tested for years in ipaddr and the API changes in ipaddress are just cosmetic ones either for PEP 8 conformance, or to make the API map more cleanly to the underlying networking concepts. However, I'd be willing to include that proviso if anyone else has lingering concerns. Regards, Nick. Rename time.steady(strict=True) to time.monotonic()?

Hi, time.steady(strict=True) looks to be confusing for most people, some of them don't understand the purpose of the flag and others don't like a flag changing the behaviour of the function. I propose to replace time.steady(strict=True) by time.monotonic(). That would avoid the need of an ugly NotImplementedError: if the OS has no monotonic clock, time.monotonic() will just not exist. So we will have: - time.time(): realtime, can be adjusted by the system administrator (manually) or automatically by NTP - time.clock(): monotonic clock on Windows, CPU time on UNIX - time.monotonic(): monotonic clock, its speed may or may not be adjusted by NTP but it only goes forward, may raise an OSError - time.steady(): monotonic clock or the realtime clock, depending on what is available on the platform (use monotonic in priority). may be adjusted by NTP or the system administrator, may go backward. time.steady() is something like: try: return time.monotonic() except (NotImplementError, OSError): return time.time() time.time(), time.clock(), time.steady() are always available, whereas time.monotonic() will not be available on some platforms. I tripped over this one trying to make one of our Python at work Windows compatible. We had no idea that a magic 'SystemRoot' environment variable would be required, and it was causing issues for pyzmq. It might be nice to reflect the findings of this email thread on the subprocess documentation page: http://docs.python.org/library/subprocess.html Currently the docs mention this: "Note If specified, env must provide any variables required for the program to execute. On Windows, in order to run a side-by-side assembly the specified env must include a valid SystemRoot." How about rewording that to: "Note If specified, env must provide any variables required for the program to execute. On Windows, a valid SystemRoot environment variable is required for some Python libraries such as the 'random' module. Also, in order to run a side-by-side assembly the specified env must include a valid SystemRoot."

What does this verify? My assumption from the name (test_quick_connect) and the context (an asynchronous server) is that it is verifying the server can handle a certain level of load. Refusing the sockets should then be a failure, or at least a skipped test. Would the below fail even if asyncore.loop were taken out of the threading.Thread target altogether?
