Hi, I noticed that there is a PEP (3154) and a GSoC proposal about improving Pickle. Given the recent discussion on this list about using Cython for the import module, I wonder if it wouldn't make even more sense to switch from a C (accelerator) implementation to Cython for _pickle. The rationale is that C code that deals a lot with object operations tends to be rather verbose, and _pickle specifically looks very verbose in many places. imp.cache_from_source() (and thus also imp.source_from_cache()) has special semantics compared to how os.path.join() works. It looks like the test suite accommodates a stable import state to some extent, but would it be worth having a PEP-405-esque context manager to help with this? As I clean up Python/import.c and move much of its functionality into Lib/imp.py, I am about to run into some stuff that was not kept private to the file. In reviewing a fix for the metaclass calculation in __build_class__ [1], I realised that PEP 3115 poses a potential problem for the common practice of using "type(name, bases, ns)" for dynamic class creation.
