hg.python.org issue: log page entries don't always link to revision

On hg.python.org, it seems like the entries on the "log" page don't always link to the corresponding revision: http://hg.python.org/cpython/shortlog This seems to happen whenever the revision description begins with text that results in a link to something else (e.g. an issue number), for example: "Issue #15822: Fix installation of lib2to3 grammar pickles to ensure." In contrast, the "graph" page seems always to link to the revision: http://hg.python.org/cpython/graph Related to this, if the description field contains text that results in a link to something else, then the UI doesn't make a distinction between the portion of the description that links to the revision and the portion that links to the something else. For example, with description text "Fix for fcc629208842", "Fix for" links to the revision for the log entry, but "fcc629208842" links to the named revision, and there is no separation or visual indicator that the two portions of text link to different things. It might be better if the revision link was separate from the description text. That would be one way to address both of the issues above. --Chris

Online docs: make index search available everywhere

For the Windows Help version of the docs, the left side box has 4 tabs: Contents, Index, Search, Favorites. I now mostly use the Index tab. That means that I can enter an indexed keyword, topic, or object name and jump from place to place in the docs. The left margin of the online docs only has a text search box equivalent to the Windows search tab (which I essentially never use). The index is only available on the front page, possibly not even visible without scrolling. Consequently, people, especially beginners, tend to use the text search box when they should be using the index. The result is often useless. The issue came up on python-list about a beginner entering 'print' and getting nothing useful. With the Windows doc, 'print' in the index search immediately brings up print (builtin function) (twice, I did not look into why). The same thing in the search lists 153 pages, with the builtin functions page at 75. Not too surprising, as it is a long page with only 3 occurrences of 'print'. Also not useful. So I think the online docs should also have an always available index search box in addition to the text search box (which should be properly labeled as such). 'Enter a module, class, for function name.' should be applied to index search, not text search. An alternative is for the one box to give both index search results and text search results, but doing the latter when one only wants the former is a waste of both server and reader resources. I presume this suggestion does not belong on bugs.python.org, so I hope one of the docs people reading pydev will do something with it. -- Terry Jan Reedy

Coverity scan

Hello everybody, two weeks ago Stefan Krah asked for a current Coverity scan report. Coverity has updated us to a new version with a new workflow. Before the update Coverity pulled the code from our version control system. However the latest version doesn't work that way. The code must be compiled with the Coverity tool chain, published to a public web server and then downloaded by Coverity. http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-committers/2012-August/002134.html It's easy, doesn't take much effort and can easily be automated, but somebody has to do it. The process should also be placed on the Python infrastructure and I don't have access. Secondly somebody has to contact Coverity to apply for an upload account. I tried my user account without success. It be nice if we get Coverity scans up and running this week to check the upcoming release candidate for issues. Christian

Subject was: "[issue715365]" Mail Gateway Help ================= Incoming messages are examined for multiple parts: . In a multipart/mixed message or part, each subpart is extracted and examined. The text/plain subparts are assembled to form the textual body of the message, to be stored in the file associated with a "msg" class node. Any parts of other types are each stored in separate files and given "file" class nodes that are linked to the "msg" node. . In a multipart/alternative message or part, we look for a text/plain subpart and ignore the other parts. . A message/rfc822 is treated similar tomultipart/mixed (except for special handling of the first text part) if unpack_rfc822 is set in the mailgw config section. Summary ------- The "summary" property on message nodes is taken from the first non-quoting section in the message body. The message body is divided into sections by blank lines. Sections where the second and all subsequent lines begin with a ">" or "|" character are considered "quoting sections". The first line of the first non-quoting section becomes the summary of the message. Addresses --------- All of the addresses in the To: and Cc: headers of the incoming message are looked up among the user nodes, and the corresponding users are placed in the "recipients" property on the new "msg" node. The address in the From: header similarly determines the "author" property of the new "msg" node. The default handling for addresses that don't have corresponding users is to create new users with no passwords and a username equal to the address. (The web interface does not permit logins for users with no passwords.) If we prefer to reject mail from outside sources, we can simply register an auditor on the "user" class that prevents the creation of user nodes with no passwords. Actions ------- The subject line of the incoming message is examined to determine whether the message is an attempt to create a new item or to discuss an existing item. A designator enclosed in square brackets is sought as the first thing on the subject line (after skipping any "Fwd:" or "Re:" prefixes). If an item designator (class name and id number) is found there, the newly created "msg" node is added to the "messages" property for that item, and any new "file" nodes are added to the "files" property for the item. If just an item class name is found there, we attempt to create a new item of that class with its "messages" property initialized to contain the new "msg" node and its "files" property initialized to contain any new "file" nodes. Triggers -------- Both cases may trigger detectors (in the first case we are calling the set() method to add the message to the item's spool; in the second case we are calling the create() method to create a new node). If an auditor raises an exception, the original message is bounced back to the sender with the explanatory message given in the exception. Python 2.7: only Visual Studio 2008?

Greetings, it is my understanding that the patches floating around the net to support Visual Studio 2010 to compile the Python core and for distutils will never be accepted and therefore that the 2.7 line is stuck to VS 2008 for the remaining of its life. A few more edits at https://bitbucket.org/dholth/python-peps/diff/pep-0426.txt?diff2=058b058ee3… rfc822 is nixed in favor of 'parseable by email.parser.Parser with the right policy' Encoding is strictly utf-8 with the warning that older revisions have no defined encoding (keys are still always ASCII) Extra names are now 'printable ascii except , [ ]' instead of 'valid Python identifiers'. Extension names are now 'ascii, with no whitespace or /', with the / separator between the extension name and the rest of the tag name. No 'the order doesn't matter' clause yet.

ABI stability between bugfix versions?

Hello, To fix the crash in http://bugs.python.org/issue13992, I have to change the definition of the Py_TRASHCAN_SAFE_BEGIN and Py_TRASHCAN_SAFE_END macros in a way that makes them stop rely on global variables. Despite being undocumented, these two macros are used in a couple of third-party extension modules (*) such as greenlet and py-judy. This means that such an extension compiled for 2.7.3 wouldn't work with 2.7.4, and vice-versa. Is there something we can do to alleviate the issue? Add a note in the release notes? Regards Antoine.
