Can we split PEP 489 (extension module init) ?

Hi, coming back to PEP 489 [1], the multi-phase extension module initialization. We originally designed it as an "all or nothing" feature, but as it turns out, the "all" part is so difficult to achieve that most potential users end up with "nothing". So, my question is: could we split it up so that projects can get at least the main advantages: module spec and unicode module naming. PEP 489 is a great protocol in the sense that it allows extension modules to set themselves up in the same way that Python modules do: load, create module, execute module code. Without it, creating the module and executing its code are a single step that is outside of the control of CPython, which prevents the module from knowing its metadata and CPython from knowing up-front what the module will actually be. Now, the problem with PEP 489 is that it requires support for reloading and subinterpreters at the same time [2]. For this, extension modules must essentially be free of static global state, which comprises both the module code itself and any external native libraries that it uses. That is somewhere between difficult and impossible to achieve. PEP 573 [3] explains some of the reasons, and lists solutions for some of the issues, but cannot solve the general problem that some extension modules simply cannot get rid of their global state, and are therefore inherently incompatible with reloading and subinterpreters. I would like the requirement in [2] to be lifted in PEP 489, to make the main features of the PEP generally available to all extension modules. The question is then how to opt out of the subinterpreter support. The PEP explicitly does not allow backporting new init slot functions/feeatures: "Unknown slot IDs will cause the import to fail with SystemError." But at least changing this in Py3.8 should be doable and would be really nice. What do you think? Let's change to C API!

Hi, I just sent an email to the capi-sig mailing list. Since this mailing list was idle for months, I copy my email here to get a wider audience. But if possible, I would prefer that you join me on capi-sig to reply ;-) -- Hi, Last year, I gave a talk at the Language Summit (during Pycon) to explain that CPython should become 2x faster to remain competitive. IMHO all attempts to optimize Python (CPython forks) have failed because they have been blocked by the C API which implies strict constraints. I started to write a proposal to change the C API to hide implementation details, to prepare CPython for future changes. It allows to experimental optimization ideas without loosing support for C extensions. C extensions are a large part of the Python success. They are also the reason why PyPy didn't replace CPython yet. PyPy cpyext remains slower than CPython because PyPy has to mimick CPython which adds a significant overhead (even if PyPy developers are working *hard* to optimize it). Class decorators can't be pickled, which breaks multiprocessing and concurrent.futures. Any plans of improving this?

Hello folks! I'm using the `concurrent.futures.ProcessPoolExecutor` with a couple of functions that have been decorated with a class decorator. Both `concurrent.futures` and `multiprocessing` breaks because "the object's can't be pickled". There's a really simple fix for this, which is just, instead of "decorating" the function (with the @), instantiate the decorator and use it directly. Example. This is my (very simple, for demonstration purposes) decorator: class CheckOnlyIntegers: def __init__(self, fn): self.fn = fn def __call__(self, *args): if not all([type(arg) == int for arg in args]): raise ValueError("Invalid param is not an integer") return self.fn(*args) If I define a simple `add` function and decorate it using the `CheckOnlyIntegers` decorator: @CheckOnlyIntegers def add(x, y): return x + y and try using a regular `ProcessPoolExecutor().submit(add, 2, 3)`, it fails with: ``` Can't pickle <function add at 0x10ace3e18>: it's not the same object as __main__.add. ``` The fix for this is simple, instead of "decorating" the function, instantiate the class and use a different name: def add(x, y): return x + y add_2 = CheckOnlyIntegers(add) In this case `ProcessPoolExecutor().submit(add_2, 2, 3)` works correctly. But are there any ways of improving this in future versions? Not being able to pickle functions decorated with Class Decorators seems like an unnecessary limitation. Problem in importing python packages under python 3.6 environment

Hi All, I have limited knowledge on python development. I am trying to write a test application which needs to import from many packages across mutliple directories. I tried using an environment variable and appending to sys.path variable so that import Class methods works. I am trying to replace the above logic by below syntax. from directory.fileName import ClassName But this syntax does not work. Please let me know any solution for this issue.

This is the first time that I try to refactor code of CPython on GitHub, so I am very excited. The curious case of 255 function arguments

Hello Python Gurus, TL;DR: 3.7 released functions having greater than 255 arguments. Despite explicit checks for this in 2.x, no such limit is actually imposed -- why? In the 3.7 release notes "Other Language Changes" section ( https://docs.python.org/3.7/whatsnew/3.7.html#other-language-changes), the first bullet point denotes > More than 255 arguments can now be passed to a function, and a function can now have more than 255 parameters. (Contributed by Serhiy Storchaka in bpo-12844 <https://bugs.python.org/issue12844> and bpo-18896 <https://bugs.python.org/issue18896>.) Now lets get something straight: unless I want to exclusively support Python 3.7 or higher, I must make sure I obey the <255 rule. Use *args // **kwargs, etc. I'm totally ok with that, 2020 is already here in my mind ;) Curiosity is the reason I'm reaching out. Upon further investigation and some discussion with like-minded Python enthusiasts, the code being patched by Serhiy Storchaka is present in e.g., Python 2.7 ( https://github.com/python/cpython/blob/2.7/Python/ast.c#L2013-L2016) if (nargs + nkeywords + ngens > 255) { ast_error(n, "more than 255 arguments"); return NULL; } Despite that code, as demonstrated with the supplemental output in the post script, *no 2.x versions fail with >255 arguments*. In contrast, 3.x where x<7 all do fail (as expected) with a SyntaxError. To test this, I tried every minor release of python (excluding v1, arbitrarily choosing the latest patch release of a minor version) with the following snippet via the -c flag /path/to/pythonX.Y -c 'exec("def foo(" + ", ".join(["a" + str(i) for i in range(1, 300)]) + "): pass")' Which tries to construct a function def foo(a0, a1, ..., a299): pass I've looked at the C code for a while and it is entirely non-obvious what would lead to python *2* *allowing* >255 arguments. Anybody happen to know how / why the python *2* versions *succeed*? Thank you for reading, this is not a problem, just a burning desire for closure (even if anecdotal) as to how this can be. I deeply love python, and am not complaining! I stumbled across this and found it truly confounding, and thought the gurus here may happen to recall what changed in 3.x that lead the the error condition actually being asserted :) Sincerely, Stephen McDowell P.S.
