Change windows installation program name

I raise https://bugs.python.org/issue43156 that suggests that new users on windows would be less confused if the name of the installation program did not seem to imply it was the python program. In a nutshell the proposal is to change from this: python-3.10.0a5.exe python-3.10.0a5-amd64.exe to this (thanks to Matthew Barnett for the improved names: python-3.10.0a5-win32-setup.exe python-3.10.0a5-win64-setup.exe Barry

Hi Nick, Regarding `f_locals` PEP 558 states: """ Instead of being a direct reference to the internal dynamic snapshot used to populate the independent snapshots returned by locals(), frame.f_locals will be updated to instead return a dedicated proxy type (implemented as a private subclass of the existing types.MappingProxyType) that has two internal attributes not exposed as part of the Python runtime API: * mapping: an implicitly updated snapshot of the function local variables and closure references, as well as any arbitrary items that have been set via the mapping API, even if they don't have storage allocated for them on the underlying frame * frame: the underlying frame that the snapshot is for """ This seems rather complex, and consequently fragile. I fear that this is just going to result in different bugs, rather than fixing the bugs it proposes to fix. Why not just make `f_local` a direct view on the underlying frame? What's up with assignment expression and tuples?

Hello, Everyone knows how hard to find a compelling usecase for the assignment expression operator (":=", colloquially "walrus operator"). https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0572/ examples never felt compelling and we all remember the split it caused. I finally found a usecase where *not* using assignment expression is *much* worse than using it. I'm working on SSA (Static Single Assignment, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Static_single_assignment_form) conversion of Python programs, where there's a need to "join" dataflow of values from different control flow paths using a special function (Phi function). This "joining" itself creates a new variable, and of course, the original variable was used in an expression. We've got assignment in expression, assignment expression operator to the rescue! With it, a simple loop like: ---- a = 0 while a < 5: a += 1 ---- becomes: ---- a0 = 0 while (a1 := phi(a0, a2)) < 5: a2 = a1 + 1 ---- So far, so good. But semantics of Phi function is parallel assignment. No problem with Python either, "a, b = b, c" is exactly parallel assignment. So, let's try example with 2 variables: ---- a = 0 b = 10 while a < 5: a += 1 b += 1 ---- becomes: ---- a0 = 0 b0 = 10 while ((a1, b1) := phi([a0, a2], [b0, b2]))[0] < 5: a2 = a1 + 1 b2 = b1 + 1 ---- But oops: > SyntaxError: cannot use assignment expressions with tuple To reproduce in the REPL: ---- >>> ((a, b) := (1, 2)) File "<stdin>", line 1 SyntaxError: cannot use assignment expressions with tuple ---- Why this accidental syntactic gap? Why assignment statement can do parallel assignment with a tuple on LHS, and assignment operator suddenly can't? Why the adhoc naming and conceptual shift on the AST level, when PEP572 explicitly talks about *assignment operator*, but corresponding node on the AST level is called NamedExpr? Why look at assignment expression as "name of expression" instead of assignment expression per se? It's of course not a problem to recast: NamedExpr(expr target, expr value) to NamedExpr(expr* target, expr value) in the ASDL (and it works out of the box), the point is that it should have been ExprAssign from the start (folloing the AugAssign and AnnAssign tradition). -- Best regards, Paul mailto:pmiscml@gmail.com

Dusting off PEP 533?

I've now experienced an issue I believe that PEP 533 was intended to address: When an asynchronous context manager is created within an asynchronous generator, if the generator is not iterated fully, the context manager will not exit until the event loop cancels the task by raising a CancelledError, long after the context manager is assumed to be out of scope. Per PEP 525, I can call aclose coroutine method to cleanup the generator, but it requires the code iterating to be aware that that closing the generator is necessary. Any appetite for putting PEP 533 back on the table to address this kind of issue?

Concerns about PEP 634

Hi, Since a decision on PEP 634 is imminent, I'd like to reiterate some concerns that I voiced last year. I am worried about the semantics and implementation of PEP 634. I don't want to comment on the merits of pattern matching in general, or the proposed syntax in PEP 634 (or PEP 640 or PEP 642). Semantics --------- 1. PEP 634 eschews the object model, in favour of adhoc instance checks, length checks and attribute accesses. This is in contrast to almost all of the the rest of the language, which uses special (dunder) methods: All operators, subscripting, attribute lookup, iteration, calls, tests, object creation, conversions, and the with statement AFAICT, no justification is given for this. Why can't pattern matching use the object model? PEP 343 (the "with" statement) added the __enter__ and __exit__ methods to the object model, and that works very well. 2. PEP 634 deliberately introduces a large area of undefined behaviour into Python. https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0634/#side-effects-and-undefined-behavi… Python has, in general, been strict about not having undefined behaviour. Having defined semantics means that you can reason about programs, even non-idiomatic ones. [This is not unique to Python, it is really only C and C++ that have areas of undefined behaviour] I can see no good reason for adding undefined behaviour. It doesn't help anyone. The lack of precise semantics makes programs harder to understand, and it makes the language harder to implement. If the semantics aren't specified, then the implementation becomes the specification. This bakes bugs into the language and makes it harder to maintain, as bug-for-bug compatibility must be maintained. 3. Performance PEP 634 says that each pattern must be checked in turn. That means that multiple redundant checks must be performed on (for example) a sequence if there are several mapping patterns. This is unnecessarily slow. Implementation -------------- My main concern with the implementation is that it does too much work into the interpreter. Much of that work can and should be done in the compiler. For example, deep in the implementation of the MATCH_CLASS instruction is the following comment: https://github.com/brandtbucher/cpython/blob/patma/Python/ceval.c#L981 Such complex control flow should be handled during compilation, rather than in the interpreter. Giant instructions like MATCH_CLASS are likely to have odd corner cases, and may well have a negative impact on the performance of the rest of the language. It is a lot easier to reason about a sequence of simple bytecodes, than one giant one with context-dependent behaviour. We have spent quite a lot of effort over the last few years streamlining the interpreter. Adding these extremely complex instructions would be a big backward step. Cheers, Mark.

Rationale ========= Deprecated since Python 3.3 --------------------------- ``Py_UNICODE`` and APIs using it are deprecated since Python 3.3. Inefficient ----------- All of these APIs are implemented using ``PyUnicode_FromWideChar``. So these APIs are inefficient when user want to encode Unicode object. Not used widely --------------- When searching from top 4000 PyPI packages [1]_, only pyodbc use these APIs. * ``PyUnicode_EncodeUTF8()`` * ``PyUnicode_EncodeUTF16()`` pyodbc uses these APIs to encode Unicode object into bytes object. So it is easy to fix it. [2]_ Alternative APIs ================ There are alternative APIs to accept ``PyObject *unicode`` instead of ``Py_UNICODE *``. Replace ``Py_UNICODE*`` with ``Py_UCS4*`` ----------------------------------------- We can replace ``Py_UNICODE`` (typedef of ``wchar_t``) with ``Py_UCS4``. Since builtin codecs support UCS-4, we don't need to convert ``Py_UCS4*`` string to Unicode object. Pros: * We have more consistent API set. * User can encode UCS-4 string in C without creating Unicode object. Cons: * We have more public APIs to maintain. * Applications which uses UTF-8 or UTF-32 can not use these APIs anyway. * Other Python implementations may not have builtin codec for UCS-4. * If we change the Unicode internal representation to UTF-8, we need to keep UCS-4 support only for these APIs. Replace ``Py_UNICODE*`` with ``wchar_t*`` ----------------------------------------- We can replace ``Py_UNICODE`` to ``wchar_t``. Pros: * We have more consistent API set. * Backward compatible. Cons: * We have more public APIs to maintain. * They are inefficient on platforms ``wchar_t*`` is UTF-16. It is because built-in codecs supports only UCS-1, UCS-2, and UCS-4 input. Rejected ideas ============== Using runtime warning --------------------- These APIs doesn't release GIL for now. Emitting a warning from such APIs is not safe. See this example. .. code-block:: PyObject *u = PyList_GET_ITEM(list, i); // u is borrowed reference. PyObject *t = PyTuple_Pack(2, u, b); Py_DECREF(b); return t; If we emit Python warning from ``PyUnicode_EncodeUTF8()``, warning filters and other threads may change the ``list`` and ``u`` can be a dangling reference after ``PyUnicode_EncodeUTF8()`` returned. Additionally, since we are not changing behavior but removing C APIs, runtime ``DeprecationWarning`` might not helpful for Python developers. We should warn to extension developers instead. Understanding "is not safe" in typeobject.c

Hi, I'm trying to understand the purpose of the check in tp_new_wrapper() of typeobject.c that results in the "is not safe" exception. I have the following class hierarchy... B -> A -> object ...where B and A are implemented in C. Class A has an implementation of tp_new which does a few context-specific checks before calling PyBaseObject_Type.tp_new() directly to actually create the object. This works fine. However I want to allow class B to be used with a Python mixin. A's tp_new() then has to do something similar to super().__new__(). I have tried to implement this by locating the type object after A in B's MRO, getting it's '__new__' attribute and calling it (using PyObject_Call()) with B passed as the only argument. However I then get the "is not safe" exception, specifically... TypeError: object.__new__(B) is not safe, use B.__new__() I take the same approach for __init__() and that works fine. If I comment out the check in tp_new_wrapper() then everything works fine. So, am I doing something unsafe? If so, what? Or, is the check at fault in not allowing the case of a C extension type with its own tp_new? Thanks, Phil

PEP 563: get_type_hints should use closure when available

The discussion around PEP 649 got me thinking about what I believe is the largest downside to PEP 563: the inability to evaluate annotations created with closures. While this is in general unavoidable, if the type is ever referenced in an annotated function (including as an annotation) it should be resolvable via `__closure__`. For example: ``` from __future__ import annotations import typing def gen(T): def f(x: T): y: T = ... return f f = gen(int) nonlocal_vars = { var : cell.cell_contents for var, cell in zip(f.__code__.co_freevars, f.__closure__) } assert typing.get_type_hints(f, localns=nonlocal_vars) == {'x': int} ``` I would just open a PR to have `get_type_hints` attempt to resolve closure variables by default. However, this would require an update to PEP 563 and I don't know what the protocol is there. - Caleb Donovick

We are planning to produce the next security-fix rollup releases for Python 3.7.x and 3.6.x on 2021-01-15. The most recent releases for these versions were on 2020-08-17. There has not been a lot of activity for either branch since then. Core developers: if you know of any additional security issues that should be addressed in these releases, please mark the relevant bpo issues as "release blocker" and, if possible, submit PRs for review prior to the end of 2021-01-14 AOE. Well, this one took a bit more time due to some surprise last time reference leaks and release blockers to fix, but now Python 3.10.0a5 it’s here. And now for something completely different The Chandrasekhar limit is the maximum mass of a stable white dwarf star. White dwarfs resist gravitational collapse primarily through electron degeneracy pressure, compared to main sequence stars, which resist collapse through thermal pressure. The Chandrasekhar limit is the mass above which electron degeneracy pressure in the star’s core is insufficient to balance the star’s own gravitational self-attraction. Consequently, a white dwarf with a mass greater than the limit is subject to further gravitational collapse, evolving into a different type of stellar remnant, such as a neutron star or black hole. Those with masses up to the limit remain stable as white dwarfs. The currently accepted value of the Chandrasekhar limit is about 1.4 M☉ (2.765×1030 kg). Constructing expected_opinfo_* lists in test_dis.py

I'm still messing around with my register VM stuff (off-and-on). I'm trying to adjust to some changes made a while ago, particularly (but probably not exclusively) after RERAISE acquired an argument. As a result, at least the expected_opinfo_jumpy list changed in a substantial way. I can manually work my way through it, but it sorta seems like someone might have used a script to translate the output of dis.dis(jumpy) into this list. Am I mistaken about this? Thx, Skip

Hi everyone, I am prepared to start the release process for Python 3.10 a5 but there are several issues marked as release blockers that affect 3.10: * https://bugs.python.org/issue38302 * https://bugs.python.org/issue42634 * https://bugs.python.org/issue41490 * https://bugs.python.org/issue42967 * https://bugs.python.org/issue42899 Although release blockers mainly apply to important releases, there are two are security issues and some of the rest involve changes in bytecode or the tracing machinery, so I would prefer if these issues are addressed before making a new release as many maintainers are waiting for the next alpha to test again the bugs that they reported. Please, if you are involved in any of these issues try to see if is possible to address them or if you think is ok to release the alpha without a fix, please, drop me an email stating so. Why aren't we allowing the use of C11?

Hi everyone, PEP 7 says that C code should conform to C89 with a subset of C99 allowed. It's 2021 and all the major compilers support C11 (ignoring the optional parts). C11 has support for thread locals, static asserts, and anonymous structs and unions. All useful features. Is there a good reason not to start using C11 now? Cheers, Mark.
