Only VS 2008 is required for the old files. Building in PC/VS9.0/ post-backport is exactly the same as building in PCbuild/ pre-backport.
I guess will have the discussion about switching compilers for Python 2.7 again at some point. People writing extensions will sooner or later want to use features from more recent compilers for Python 2.7 as well :-)
I expect the same outcome every time it comes up --- too much breakage for not enough benefit :) -- Zach
