Also, the method seems rather complicated for doing a simple thing. The only thing I really want is a way to refer to an _New or _Convert method from Python code.

Yes, this looks very much like what I had in mind, except that you demonstrate how to store and retrieve a C structure in the type's tp_dict. Nice intro into PyCObject! Thanks, Thomas
