You assume it was contrived, but it wasn't at all. We hit exactly these problems almost upon first use. We were in the process of copying a large amount of data from our corporate Sybase database.
Getting very off-topic here, but I'm surprised you considered SQLite in this situation, as an "equivalent" to Sybase. I'd certainly never seen it as catering for that sort of application. I see it more related to something like MS Access (which I hope no-one would consider for serious sized corporate applications - even though I know some people do :-() Of course, if that perception is common, then I think that the library documentation should be very clear about where SQLite is appropriate, and where it is not...
