The other safer alternative is to start to provide "py" launcher on
Unix as well. Since it's something new, it's perfectly fine to decide
from the start to make it point to the latest Python version by
default.

Since it has come up a couple of times and in case people are curious, the Python Launcher for UNIX is currently available at https://crates.io/crates/python-launcher and the basics are there. I have one more key feature to implement -- `py --list` -- before I view it as having all the basics in place. Once I have --list done it will be trying to tackle the hard issue of how to tie in things like PyPy or non-PATH-installed interpreters into the launcher (which, since it is configuration, people will bikeshed on forever about, so maybe I should ignore people and solve it quickly ;) .
