As Ian says: setuptools relies on it. It's part of the specification of the package index.
Where is that specification? Does it require only http://pypi.python.org/pypi/ to be voluminous or also http://pypi.python.org/pypi to provide some search interface for automatic processing? There should be no problem in moving search page to the root http://pypi.python.org/ if spec is silent about the latter. -- anatoly t.
