I personally would like for `python` to be the latest Python 3 version (or perhaps Brett’s launcher), `python2` to be Python 2.7 where installed (and not mandatory). `python3` would be an alias for the latest Python 3.
It appears python is already python3 for a large majority of human users (as opposed to machines). https://www.jetbrains.com/research/python-developers-survey-2018/ Nearly 20000 valid responses, Oct-Nov. "Which version of Python do you use the most" Python 3: 75% in 2017, 84% in 2018. The figure for other public surveys were 22%, 34%, 40% in Dec 2013, Dec 2014, Jan 2016. I expect at least 90% by next January. Py3 is already 90% among data scientists. -- Terry Jan Reedy
