py3k will soon be moving to Mercurial, so svnmerge would not be helpful for much longer. On the plus side, since Mercurial is a Distributed Version Control System, if you setup an unofficial continuation of Python 2 on the host of your choice, it will be easy for you to pull patches from py3k.
I believe we'll eventually have the ability to create user repos as well, so that Kristjan can simply put his branch into one of these and still have it on hg.python.org.
